Perseverance reached the milestone on Oct. 11, 2026, after just over five and a half years on the Red Planet.

Opportunity covered 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers) between 2004 and 2018, taking nearly 15 years to reach the distance Perseverance has now exceeded. The new record reflects advances in autonomous navigation that allow Perseverance to assess the terrain and drive more efficiently, reducing its dependence on instructions from Earth.

The milestone came during Perseverance’s exploration near the western rim of Jezero Crater, an ancient impact basin that scientists believe once held a lake. The rover is investigating rocks and geological formations that could preserve evidence of Mars’ distant past, including conditions that may once have supported microbial life.

Autonomous navigation helps Perseverance cover more ground

The mission also has a Colombian connection through aerospace engineer Diana Trujillo, who worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California as a tactical mission lead for Perseverance, overseeing sequence planning and execution. Born and raised in Colombia, Trujillo helped lead key operations during the rover’s mission, including the deployment of its robotic arm. Her work formed part of the broader engineering effort behind Perseverance’s exploration of Mars.

Perseverance’s record owes much to AutoNav, NASA’s autonomous navigation system. The technology allows the rover to photograph the ground as it moves, build a three-dimensional map of obstacles and choose a safe route between waypoints planned by engineers on Earth.

According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Perseverance has used AutoNav for more than 90% of its total driving distance. Opportunity, its predecessor, relied on autonomous navigation for about 5% of its travel. Perseverance can evaluate as many as 600,000 measurement points during each assessment of the terrain, compared with 20 used by NASA’s first Mars rover, Sojourner.

With the new system, Perseverance can travel up to 1,351 feet (412 meters) per Martian day, known as a sol. Human controllers still choose its targets and direct the mission. However, the rover now plots its immediate route independently, reducing delays associated with ground control.

That capability matters because communications between Earth and Mars involve delays. A rover that can recognize hazards and adjust its path independently can spend more time moving through the landscape and less time waiting for new commands.

Steven Lee, project manager for NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers at JPL in Southern California, said the vehicle’s mobility systems remained fully operational and that testing supported expectations of continued use.

“The original mission called for no more than 12.4 miles of driving,” Lee said in NASA’s Oct. 12 announcement. Perseverance has already traveled more than twice that planned distance.

What Perseverance is looking for on Mars

The distance record is a milestone for the rover’s engineering team, but the mission’s main purpose is scientific. Perseverance landed in Jezero Crater in February 2021 to investigate whether ancient Mars had conditions suitable for microbial life and to collect rock and soil samples for potential return to Earth.

Scientists selected Jezero because evidence suggests it once contained a lake and a river delta. On Earth, such environments can preserve traces of past biological activity, making their Martian counterparts valuable places to investigate the planet’s ancient habitability.

During its mission, Perseverance has traveled across the crater floor, explored the delta and climbed toward the crater rim. NASA reported that the rover had collected 29 rock and regolith samples by the time it set the driving record. These samples represent different geological environments and could help researchers reconstruct changes in Mars’ history.

The rover has also investigated a rock called Cheyava Falls, where scientists identified a potential biosignature. Such evidence may indicate processes associated with life, but it does not establish that organisms existed on Mars. Researchers need further analysis before drawing conclusions about the planet’s biological past.

Perseverance is now exploring the Lac de Charmes region near the western rim of Jezero Crater, heading toward an area called Idubi. Scientists hope to find traces of ancient hydrothermal systems there, which could reveal more about the environments that existed on early Mars.

NASA expects the record to keep growing

NASA has approved an extension of Perseverance’s mission that began in October 2026 and is expected to continue through approximately the end of 2028. The rover will keep investigating the crater rim, including a planned journey toward Rainbow Falls, a section of ancient crust roughly 328 feet (100 meters) wide that was uplifted by the impact that formed Jezero Crater.

The record also puts Perseverance’s achievement in the context of decades of robotic exploration. Sojourner traveled about 330 feet (100 meters) during its 83-sol mission in 1997. Spirit covered 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) before its mission ended in 2010, while Opportunity continued for 5,111 sols and completed the first extraterrestrial marathon in 2015. Curiosity, which landed in Gale Crater in 2012, has also continued operating and has traveled more than 23.65 miles (38.07 kilometers).

Perseverance’s achievement extends beyond the previous Mars rover record. It has also surpassed the distances driven by Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt on the Moon in 1972, as well as the distance covered by the Soviet Union’s Lunokhod 2 lunar rover in 1973.

NASA’s immediate priority remains scientific exploration. Longer drives give the team access to more geological formations, allow the rover to examine a wider range of rocks and help researchers investigate different chapters of Martian history.

The record-breaking drive on Oct. 11 covered 299.6 feet (91.31 meters), enough to push Perseverance past Opportunity’s mark. With its extended mission underway, the rover is positioned to increase the distance as it continues exploring Mars.

NASA’s Mars rover, Perseverance, remains operational and continues to move across the surface.
