Protein.

The popcorn has joined in. The bottled water would like to discuss muscle recovery. In Germany, even alcohol-free beer has entered the conversation.

Your shopping basket appears to be training for something.

In India, Quaker has introduced Protein Ladooz and Protein Chikki Bites. AQUATEIN sells protein water; Poptein offers protein popcorn. Abroad, there are protein Pop-Tarts and protein Doritos.

Sign up for Open Magazine’s ad-free experience

Enjoy uninterrupted access to premium content and insights.

The products are real. The question is what their protein credentials mean for the person eating them.

FIRST, WHAT DOES PROTEIN ACTUALLY DO?

It helps build and maintain tissues, including muscle, and supplies amino acids used to make enzymes, hormones and other essential components of the body.

You need it whether your exercise involves lifting weights or carrying groceries upstairs.

Adequate protein matters. So does the rest of the diet: energy, fibre, fats, vitamins and minerals all have jobs to do.

Protein may currently have the loudest publicity department. It does not run the body alone.

WHY HAS IT BECOME SUCH A BIG SELLING POINT?

Protein connects several things consumers want: muscle maintenance, exercise recovery and support for weight-management goals.

Interest extends beyond dedicated gym users. In a 2025 survey of 3,000 American adults, 23% reported following a high-protein eating pattern during the preceding year, compared with 20% in 2024. That measures reported behaviour in the US; it does not establish nutritional need in India.

Weight-management treatments have also created new product opportunities. Nestlé identifies nutrition for GLP-1 medicine users as an innovation priority, including products intended to address nutritional gaps during weight loss.

For manufacturers, protein provides a benefit that can be expressed in a prominent number on the pack.

HOW UNUSUAL HAVE THE PRODUCTS BECOME?

India supplies a substantial opening act: protein water, flavoured protein popcorn, ladoos and chikki.

Quaker’s marketing director describes familiar Indian formats as a way to bring protein and fibre into everyday snacking. The approach lets people encounter an added nutrient through something they already recognise.

In the US, Pop-Tarts Protein advertises 10 grams per serving. Doritos Protein also offers 10 grams per one-ounce serving, using dairy-based casein. Germany’s JoyBräu markets alcohol-free protein beer.

The snack aisle increasingly resembles a gym reception.

An unusual format, however, tells us little by itself about nutritional value. That requires the label.

WHAT IS THE POSITIVE SIDE?

Convenience can help people meet a real need.

Someone struggling to obtain sufficient protein through their existing meals may find a suitable drink or snack useful. Portable options can help when cooking, refrigeration or time is limited.

Fortification can also add protein to a food someone would have eaten anyway.

The benefit depends on what the product contributes, what it replaces and whether the person needs that contribution.

A genuinely useful product can taste good. It does not have to resemble building material to qualify as nutrition.

AND WHAT IS THE FLIP SIDE?

The “health halo”: allowing one attractive nutrient to stand in for an assessment of the whole food.

A product can contain additional protein alongside substantial sugar, sodium, saturated fat or calories. The protein remains present. So does everything else. A fortified snack may help someone meet a protein target without being the best everyday choice for their overall diet.

The useful question is therefore bigger than “does it contain protein?” Ask how much it provides in the portion you eat—and what accompanies it.

WHY DOES SERVING SIZE MATTER SO MUCH?

Because the largest number may describe a portion larger than the one you imagined.

Consider a hypothetical snack containing 20 grams of protein per 100 grams. A 25-gram packet provides five grams.

Both numbers describe the same food. They answer different questions. For comparisons, check products on the same basis: per 100 grams, then per actual serving. Examine calories and the other nutrients alongside protein.

If you must eat twice as much to obtain the advertised amount, you also consume twice as much of everything else. The arithmetic deserves as much attention as the artwork.

HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO PEOPLE NEED?

Requirements vary with age, body size, activity, health and diet quality.

ICMR–NIN’s adult reference is 0.83 grams per kilogram of body weight daily, based on good-quality protein. For predominantly cereal-based diets with lower protein quality, it specifies one gram per kilogram.

For a healthy 60-kilogram adult, those references work out to approximately 50–60 grams daily. They are reference amounts, rather than a personalised prescription or maximum.

Athletes may need more. Sports-nutrition guidance commonly places their intake around 1.2–2 grams per kilogram daily, depending on training and circumstances.

Count protein from the entire diet. Your dal does not stop contributing because it lacks a neon label.

SO, HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

There is no single danger number applicable to everyone. Authorities have not established a universal tolerable upper intake level for protein because the evidence is insufficient.

That does not establish that unlimited intake is safe—or useful.

Extra protein does not automatically produce extra muscle. Training, adequate energy and recovery also matter.

People with kidney disease need advice specific to their condition and treatment. Some may require moderation; people undergoing dialysis can have different needs.

Another concern is what protein-focused eating displaces. A diet still needs vegetables, fruit, whole grains and other sources of fibre and nutrients.

DO WE NEED SPECIALLY BRANDED PRODUCTS?

Pulses, dairy, eggs, fish, meat, soy, nuts and seeds already contribute protein. Traditional combinations such as dal-rice, roti-chana and idli-sambar can help provide complementary protein sources.

Whey is a milk-derived protein. Its use in a product does not automatically make that product unsuitable. Equally, an expensive packet is not automatically superior to an ordinary meal.

Compare the usable contribution, convenience, cost and overall nutrition.

Roasted chana has been doing its work without a personal-branding consultant.

WHAT SHOULD WE TAKE FROM THE BOOM?

Greater attention to adequate protein can be useful. More convenient choices can help.

The mistake is treating every protein claim as proof that you need the product, or assuming that eating more must always deliver more benefit.

Read the serving size. Check the whole label. Consider your whole day. Protein is essential. Giving every snack a gym membership is optional.

The ladoo has acquired a new qualification. Protein. The popcorn has joined in.
