After a weekend of conspiracy theorizing over the hobbled theatrical rollout of Musk<\/a>, Alex Gibney\u2019s four-hour-long documentary<\/a> about the first man to give a Nazi salute at a presidential inauguration, the film\u2019s distributor, Bleeker Street, has offered an explanation: They\u2019re sending it to streaming earlier than anticipated. Per The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Bleeker Street shifted rollout strategies and moved up the film\u2019s VOD release date after its disappointing nationwide expansion. The hefty film about one of the world\u2019s most overexposed divorc\u00e9s expanded opposite another tech-CEO-focused doc that went north of two-and-a-half hours, You Can See Everything. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim\u2019s documentary shattered box-office expectations but didn\u2019t leave audiences much time to check out another lengthy movie that weekend. Musk\u00a0played on 60 screens last weekend, down from 472 the week before, and it will continue to play in select theaters for the rest of its theatrical window. Originally set to land on VOD on November 24, Bleeker Street moved the date to November 6.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Bleeker Street, the move has already paid off. The distributor claims the movie is doing quite well in preorders. It\u2019s one of two unreleased movies in Apple\u2019s Top 50\u2014the other being The Odyssey. (No, not Elon Musk\u2019s AI version.)<\/p>\n

Still, the conspiracy theories were somewhat deserved. Musk faced an uphill battle from Musk\u2019s fellow social media website owners. Musk was banned from running paid ads on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, the last of which hit the film with a \u201cpermanent suspension.\u201d<\/a> That is, until people noticed and the multibillion-dollar companies restored the ads, claiming the decisions were made in error by moderating systems. However, there may still be trouble ahead for the film. Given the issues running ads on tech platforms, concerns about Musk\u2018s planned HBO Max debut remain, particularly amid rumors of Musk himself investing $1 billion in HBO\u2019s debt-ridden new owners<\/a>.
