A Garmin on your wrist can run for days or weeks between charges, while Samsung’s newest Galaxy Watch needs a plug about every day or two. That gap is the core of a BGR piece published October 27, 2026, titled “5 Reasons To Skip A Galaxy Watch And Get Garmin Instead.” The Galaxy Watch 9 is rated for up to 40 hours with the always-on display off and up to 30 hours with it on, according to BGR. The Garmin Enduro 4 is rated for up to 90 days in smartwatch mode.

This analysis walks through the five reasons BGR lays out, checks them against the specs that can be verified, and weighs where Samsung still has the edge. The short version for anyone searching Galaxy Watch 9 vs Garmin: battery endurance is a measurable win for Garmin, while claims about accuracy, software polish, or overall value depend on how you use the watch and cannot be settled from rated specs alone.

The timing matters for shoppers. Holiday buying season is close, wearables are crowding the hardware aisle, and rivals from Huawei to Fitbit are pitching health-first designs, such as the HUAWEI WATCH D3 blood pressure watch at ISH-ECS. Against that backdrop, BGR’s pitch is simple. Samsung builds a generalist watch, and Garmin builds a tool for people who train.

The Galaxy Watch 9 vs Garmin Battery Gap in Numbers

Battery life leads BGR’s list, and the figures explain why. BGR describes the Galaxy Watch 9 as Samsung’s latest smartwatch release, rated for up to 40 hours of battery life with the always-on display disabled. Turn the always-on display on and the rating drops to up to 30 hours. For most owners, that means charging every night or at least every second day.

Garmin’s mid-range Forerunner 570 is rated for up to 10 days between charges, according to BGR. The Enduro 4 goes much further, with up to 90 days in smartwatch mode and up to 320 hours in activity mode. Activity mode is the setting where battery-hungry features such as GPS run continuously, so the 320-hour figure is the more telling number for athletes.

Source for the ratings: BGR, October 27, 2026. The hour conversions are simple arithmetic on those rated figures, not lab tests. Even so, the math is blunt. The Forerunner 570’s 240 hours is six times the Galaxy Watch 9’s 40 hours and eight times its 30-hour rating. The Enduro 4’s smartwatch mode stretches that to 54 times the Galaxy Watch 9’s best rating.

Why Solar Charging Changes the Battery Math

BGR points out that Garmin sells a line of smartwatches with solar charging. The idea is that a watch worn outdoors in sunlight tops itself up as you go, so the battery rating improves the more time the watch spends in light. The Enduro 4 is one of those models, and BGR says its numbers outperform not only the Galaxy Watch lineup but most smartwatches and fitness trackers on the market.

Samsung’s lineup, as described by BGR, has no equivalent pitch. That does not make the Galaxy Watch a poor product. It does mean a hiker planning a multi-day trip, a runner logging an ultramarathon, or a shift worker who forgets chargers faces a different calculation. Rated battery life is the one spec that changes how often you think about the watch at all.

BGR adds a practical point about control. Garmin makes it easy to move in and out of its smartwatch modes, switching battery-hungry features like GPS off when they are not needed and back on when they are. That kind of manual mode switching suits people who know their routine. Casual users may prefer a watch that simply works for a day and charges overnight.

Advanced Metrics Beyond Daily Step Counts

The second reason on BGR’s list is metrics. The outlet notes that Garmin first made a name with GPS devices and still courts outdoor and training-focused buyers. Garmin watches report heart rate variability status, track many training activities, and monitor recovery through readiness reports, BGR says.

BGR is fair to Samsung here. The Galaxy Watch 9 measures heart rate and skin temperature, offers blood pressure estimates, and tracks activities like running, cycling, yoga, and meditation through the Samsung Health ecosystem. For beginners and everyday users, BGR calls that more than enough. The gap opens at the specialist end, where Garmin builds in tracking for rowing, backpacking, pickleball, and even motorcycle riding.

What the metrics argument does not prove

More metrics do not automatically mean better outcomes. A recovery report helps only if you act on it, and a long activity list matters only if you play those sports. BGR’s piece does not publish head-to-head sensor accuracy tests, and the verified fact set for this story does not support any claim that Garmin is categorically more accurate. Treat the metrics point as a feature-depth argument, not an accuracy verdict.

Maps and Navigation Built for Rough Terrain

The third reason is navigation. BGR says Galaxy Watch-style smartwatches work fine in well-mapped areas such as cities, parks, and familiar trails. Garmin designs its mapping for rugged terrain. Many Garmin models ship with TopoActive topographic maps preloaded, which show elevation and terrain shape, so a trail runner can spot a climb before it comes into view.

BGR also says users can build routes in the Garmin Connect app and send them to the watch before heading out. Maps exist for cycling, hunting, golf, boating, skiing, and diving. A premium plan called Outdoor Maps+ adds satellite imagery, high-definition relief shading, and detailed raster maps.

That last detail deserves a flag for budget shoppers. A premium map tier means some of Garmin’s best navigation features sit behind an extra plan, and this research could not verify its current price. Anyone comparing total ownership cost should check Garmin’s own pricing before buying. The verified material here says nothing about recurring fees on the Samsung side, so a fair subscription comparison is not possible yet.

GPS Hardware: What Samsung Says About Dual-Band

Samsung is not asleep on location accuracy. Samsung USA says the Galaxy Watch8 uses dual-band GPS with L1 and L5 signals. Dual-band chips listen on two frequencies, which generally helps in urban canyons and under tree cover. That makes the Galaxy Watch a credible running companion for city routes.

The fact sheet for this story confirms the Watch8 spec but not an equivalent statement for the Watch 9, so this piece does not assume it. Hardware GPS quality and software navigation are separate things. A watch can pull a fast, accurate fix and still lack topographic maps. BGR’s argument targets the second part, which is about what the watch shows you after it knows where you are.

Compatibility: The iPhone Problem

Reason four is the one that decides purchases outright for many people. BGR says the newer models in the Galaxy Watch lineup are incompatible with Apple devices. Pairing with iOS is not supported, and some non-Samsung Android phones cannot reach every Galaxy Watch feature. If you carry an iPhone, a new Galaxy Watch is simply off the table.

You may like

Garmin takes the opposite approach. According to BGR, the Garmin Connect app installs on both Android and iOS, and everything the watch tracks lands there, including daily steps, sleep, and logged workouts. Connect can also sync with Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Strava. Because the watch does not depend on a specific phone brand, switching phones does not force a watch replacement.

This is the least arguable point on the list. Platform lock-in is a fact of design, not an opinion about quality. Android owners who want a Samsung-tuned experience can ignore it entirely. Households with mixed phones, or anyone who might move to an iPhone later, should weigh it heavily.

A Deeper Model Lineup Across Price Points

BGR’s fifth reason is breadth. Samsung products are built for the masses, in BGR’s framing, while Garmin sells a wide ladder of watches that stretches from entry-level runners to expedition-grade solar models. The Forerunner 570 sits in the middle of that ladder and the Enduro 4 near the top, per the BGR examples.

Samsung’s own ladder has real range too. Samsung USA lists the Galaxy Watch7 from $249.99 before trade-in, and the broader Galaxy Watch lineup pricing shown by Samsung USA starts from $649.99 or $27.08 a month for 24 months. Cheaper Samsung wearables exist at the other end of the market, such as the band that the Galaxy Fit 4 eyes at a $60 price, matching the Fit3 at $59.99.

The $649.99 starting figure is the lineup price Samsung USA displays, which likely reflects its higher-end models rather than the cheapest Galaxy Watch. Do not read it as the entry price for the Galaxy Watch 9 itself. This research did not find a verified Garmin price list to place beside it, so there is no like-for-like price table between the two brands.

The Five Reasons at a Glance

BGR reasonGarmin argumentGalaxy Watch counterpointVerifiable from specs?Battery life10 days (Forerunner 570), 90 days (Enduro 4)40 or 30 hours (Galaxy Watch 9)Yes, rated figuresAdvanced metricsHRV status, readiness, niche sportsHeart rate, skin temperature, blood pressure estimatesPartly, feature lists onlyMaps and navigationTopoActive maps, Outdoor Maps+ planFine for mapped city routesPartly, no accuracy testsCompatibilityConnect app on Android and iOSNo iOS pairing on newer modelsYes, design fact per BGRDeep model lineupMany models across price tiersMass-market focusQualitative

Two of five reasons rest on hard, checkable facts. Two more rest on feature lists that stop short of measured performance. The last is a judgment about product strategy. That mix is normal for a buying-advice piece, and it is why this analysis separates what BGR documented from what the reader must test for themselves.

Historical Context: Why Garmin Became the Battery Benchmark

Garmin’s reputation traces back to dedicated GPS devices, which BGR cites as the brand’s origin story. The brand is still well regarded among outdoor users and serious trainers, in BGR’s words. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch line has been one of the most popular Android smartwatch options for years, and BGR frames it as the balanced generalist.

Others have noticed the pattern. Samsung Magazine ran a piece asking why Garmin watch battery life lasts longer than it should compared with Galaxy Watch models running Wear OS. Gadget Scout, meanwhile, titled a Galaxy Watch 9 vs Garmin Venu 4 comparison with the line that only one of the two lasts a week. Three outlets, one theme. The battery gap is a recurring talking point, not a one-off BGR opinion.

Why the gap exists is a design question the sources here do not answer in detail. A fuller smartwatch experience tends to cost runtime, and a fitness-first design tends to protect it. BGR’s generalist-versus-specialist framing fits that tradeoff, though the exact engineering reasons are not documented in the verified material.

Market Impact for Wearable Shoppers and Rivals

Headlines like BGR’s push a particular kind of shopper toward Garmin: the person already frustrated by nightly charging. BGR itself says many smartwatches and fitness trackers require daily charging, and missed charges mean lost sleep and wellness data.

Read next"SamsungSamsung Galaxy F70 5G Lands in India at Rs 19,999 [2026]Hardware · Oct 18

Rivals are attacking the same weakness from other angles. Fitbit’s latest hardware takes the minimalist route, as in our look at the Fitbit Edge review of no-frills health tracking. Newer form factors like the Alloop Trio cube with band and sleep ring split wearing duties across devices so no single battery carries everything. Smart rings and bands already trade screen features for endurance.

For Samsung, the pressure is real but contained. Its watches remain a natural pick for Galaxy phone owners, and the company keeps expanding its device family, as shown by the Samsung W27 foldable launching in China on Oct. 29. For broader context on the phones these watches pair with, see our ranking of the best Android phones in 2026. Our hardware coverage tracks the wider wearable and device market.

Who Should Buy Which Watch

Pick a Garmin if you run, hike, ride, or travel where chargers are scarce. Pick one if you use an iPhone, if you want deeper training data, or if you hate remembering a nightly charge. The Forerunner 570 suits runners who want a week-plus of runtime, and the Enduro 4 suits people who spend long stretches off the grid.

Pick a Galaxy Watch if you own a Galaxy phone, value a bright, app-rich display, and charge a watch nightly without complaint. BGR itself frames the Galaxy Watch as a generalist that balances smart features and health tracking, and it concedes the lineup is strong for beginners and everyday wellness. A cheaper older model such as the Galaxy Watch7, listed from $249.99 before trade-in by Samsung USA, may also fit shoppers who want the ecosystem without the flagship bill.

Before buying either, check three things. Confirm your phone works with the watch, since compatibility is the one hard blocker. Estimate how many days you actually go between charging opportunities. Then look up current prices and any plan fees, because this research could not verify Garmin’s current price list.

Five Predictions for Smartwatch Battery Competition

These are analyst-style expectations based on the trends above, not confirmed plans from any company.

Battery claims will move to the front of marketing. As comparison pieces like BGR’s spread, I expect Samsung to lead more future launches with endurance figures, since 40 hours is the number rivals keep quoting against it.Solar charging stays a Garmin niche for now. The feature depends on sunlight exposure and adds cost, so it is likelier to remain on premium outdoor models than to reach mainstream watches soon.iOS compatibility remains a dividing line. Nothing in the verified material suggests Samsung is opening newer models to iPhone pairing, so expect the split to persist through the holiday season.Subscription tiers will draw more scrutiny. Garmin’s Outdoor Maps+ plan shows how premium features can sit behind a recurring fee, and reviewers will likely compare total ownership cost more often.Multi-device wearables will gain share at the margins. Rings, bands, and split designs sidestep the daily-charge problem, and rival coverage already points that way.

What We Could Not Verify

Several claims common in Garmin-versus-Samsung debates are not backed by the sources used here. The material does not establish that Garmin is categorically better on sensor accuracy, software, durability, or health metrics. It does not provide on-record quotes from named executives or analysts. It also lacks a verified Garmin price list and a current Garmin subscription price.

What holds up is narrower and still useful. The rated battery figures are published, the platform compatibility limit is a design fact, and the lineup breadth is easy to see in store listings. If you want a verdict on accuracy, look for independent lab or long-term tests rather than a single opinion list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Galaxy Watch 9 battery last?

BGR reports a rating of up to 40 hours with the always-on display disabled and up to 30 hours with it enabled. Real-world results vary with usage, GPS, and notifications.

How long does the Garmin Forerunner 570 last?

BGR cites up to 10 days of battery life between charges for the Forerunner 570, which it calls Garmin’s mid-range option.

What is the longest-lasting Garmin mentioned by BGR?

The Garmin Enduro 4, a solar-capable model, is rated for up to 90 days in smartwatch mode and up to 320 hours in activity mode, according to BGR.

Does the Galaxy Watch 9 work with iPhone?

No, per BGR. The newer Galaxy Watch models are incompatible with Apple devices, and some non-Samsung Android phones cannot use every feature. Garmin’s Connect app runs on both Android and iOS.

Does Garmin require a subscription?

Not for the basics as far as the verified sources show, but BGR mentions Garmin’s Outdoor Maps+ premium plan for advanced map views. We could not confirm its current price, so check Garmin before buying.

How much does a Galaxy Watch cost in the US?

Samsung USA shows lineup pricing from $649.99 or $27.08 a month for 24 months, and the Galaxy Watch7 from $249.99 before trade-in. Prices differ by model, size, and promotion.

Is Garmin more accurate than the Galaxy Watch?

The sources here do not prove that. Samsung USA says the Galaxy Watch8 uses dual-band L1 and L5 GPS, and BGR’s argument centers on battery, feature depth, maps, and compatibility rather than measured accuracy.
