SCRANTON — Construction is underway at the Wright Center for Community Health’s new health center in the 1700 block of North Main Avenue near Oak Street.

The new clinic in North Scranton, targeted for opening next summer, will replace the existing one next door to where construction is taking place.

The project cost grew from $4 million to $9 million with additional investment coming from “new market tax credits” that will allow the Wright Center to complete three floors all at once, instead of a prior phased approach, said Brian Ebersole, the Wright Center’s senior vice president for ecosystem development.

The Wright Center recently used such tax credits, which are available in underserved and disadvantaged communities, for a facility in Wilkes-Barre on Pennsylvania Avenue and at the center’s main location on South Washington Avenue in Scranton, he said.

For the North Scranton project, the center went from initially planning to do only a building shell and first floor to now completing 15,000 square feet of two operational floors and a basement with educational space and information technology infrastructure, he said.

“So we were able to design and build it the way we needed to meet our organizational long-term needs,” Ebersole said. “It’s very exciting to see how this has continued to grow, but it didn’t take us off-track on the timing.”

The plan involved first demolishing a building at 1727-1729 N. Main Ave. to make way for a new building in that spot. The location is next to the Wright Center for Community Health North Scranton health center at 1721 N. Main Ave. that opened in July 2023. Once the new building is completed, the health center building at 1721 N. Main Ave. will be demolished to make way for parking.

The project has been in the works for some time. In March, the Scranton Zoning Board approved variances regarding parking, buffers and impervious surface for the Wright Center’s project. In July, the state awarded a $1 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant to Wright Center Medical Group, to support construction of a new medical facility providing expanded healthcare services in North Scranton.

The new health center also promises to become an anchor in the North Scranton neighborhood that has broader community revitalization efforts taking root.

“It’s really going to become a pivotal piece of that redevelopment that is happening in North Scranton,” Ebersole said.
