This is typically measured in bottles, fluid ounces, or tumblers (I’ve had many clients state “I drink three of these” while holding up some sort of large, colorful tumbler from Target). Pounding water all day, every day, can even be a source of pride for some who like to carry around a gallon jug.

What many people don’t realize is how much food can (or cannot) contribute to your overall hydration status. Roughly 20 to 30 percent of your daily water intake typically comes from food in a normal mixed diet. That’s the commonly cited range from nutrition surveys and dietary guidance bodies, and it’s a reasonable baseline rather than a target you need to hit precisely.

If you eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, soups, yogurt, and cooked grains, you can land closer to 30 to 40 percent or higher. Even meat can contribute a decent amount, depending on how much you cook it. If your diet leans heavily on processed foods, it may be closer to 15 to 20 percent.

The problem, especially for people who enjoy tracking things, is that it can be hard to quantify. It’s difficult to look at a bowl of cantaloupe or a medium-rare steak and determine exactly how much water you are getting. With that in mind, you can still improve your hydration status by making the right food choices.

The most water-dense whole foods, by total water content, are:

Cucumber (about 95 to 96% water). Probably the most hydrating solid food you can eat, and easy to add to salads, sandwiches, or snack on by itself.

Lettuce (about 95%, iceberg is the highest). Romaine and other leafy greens are close behind, at roughly 90 to 95%.

Watermelon (about 92%). It also contains some potassium and is much lower in sugar on a per-serving basis than most people realize.

Strawberries (about 91%). A good option if you want something sweet with fiber and vitamin C. It’s also very filling and low in calories.

Celery (about 95%). Very high in water, though low in calories and not much else, so it’s more of a crunchy hydrator than a nutrient powerhouse.

Zucchini, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and bell peppers are all right in that 90 to 94% range too, so any of them could swap into the list depending on what you like. It’s important to note that we are only looking at hydration in the most basic sense: total water intake. We haven’t even covered the importance of electrolytes like sodium and potassium (for more, check out this article). Keep drinking your water, but remember that your plate can do some of the work too. There is no need to measure it to the ounce; just aim to include a few water-rich foods throughout the day.

This story was originally published by Men’s Fitness on Oct 28, 2026, where it first appeared in the Nutrition section.
