Additionally, they help reduce the risk of certain birth defects and support maternal health.”

Among the most important nutrients is folate, a form of folic acid. “Folic acid lowers the risk of neural tube defects, which are serious birth defects of the brain and spine,” says Mya Zapata, M.D., ob/gyn at UCLA Health. That’s a big reason why the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that people who are pregnant take in 600 micrograms of folic acid a day, including 400 mcg of it from a prenatal vitamin.

Another crucial ingredient is iron, which is “important for the production of red blood cells and the expansion of maternal blood volume during pregnancy,” Mirchandani says. If pregnant people don’t meet that increased need, they can develop iron deficiency or its more severe form, iron deficiency anemia. Iodine, too, is commonly added to support the pregnant parent’s thyroid function and the baby’s brain development.

In addition to folic acid, iron, and iodine, prenatal vitamins often contain higher levels of the below, Mirchandani and Dr. Zapata say:

Choline CalciumVitamins A, D, B6, B12, C, and KDHAZinc

Ultimately, though, “The right supplement depends on a woman’s diet, class="css-2x47mx emevuu60">Of course, prenatal vitamins should be taken during pregnancy—but it’s also not a bad idea to begin taking them before trying to conceive and during the postpartum period. “Starting a prenatal vitamin before pregnancy is especially important because folic acid supports early fetal development, often before a woman even knows she’s class="css-2x47mx emevuu60">Dr. Zapata recommends taking folic acid one month before trying to conceive—or continuously, in some circumstances. “Because about half of U.S. pregnancies are unplanned, ACOG recommends folic acid for all women of reproductive age (15–45), not just those who are trying to conceive,” she says. (Folic acid supplements can be purchased separately, so you don’t need to take a prenatal vitamin to meet this recommendation.)

Can people who aren’t pregnant or trying to conceive benefit from taking prenatal vitamins?

In short, “The answer is sometimes,” Dr. Zapata says. If you’re sexually active and in your childbearing years, taking folic acid daily is a “simple safeguard,” she adds; people who have had bariatric surgery, conditions that impair nutrient absorption, or eat a vegan diet may also benefit from prenatal vitamins, as they’re more likely to have deficits of some nutrients.

However, “For most women who aren’t pregnant or planning a pregnancy, there’s no added benefit to taking a prenatal vitamin over a regular multivitamin,” Gans says. “More nutrients don’t automatically translate to better health. If someone has a specific nutritional deficiency, it’s generally more appropriate to address that individual need rather than take a supplement designed for pregnancy.”

Dr. Zapata agrees, adding, “For most people, a balanced diet is the best foundation.”

Could taking a prenatal vitamin cause harm?

Generally, taking a prenatal vitamin when not pregnant, postpartum, or trying to conceive isn’t “necessarily harmful,” Gans says, “but it’s generally unnecessary.”

However, there are some risks. As we mentioned, prenatal vitamins contain high levels of some nutrients because they’re needed during pregnancy—but when you don’t need such large amounts, taking a prenatal vitamin can result in excess amounts of these nutrients. And, depending on how much extra you’re getting, that can cause issues ranging from mild discomfort to serious complications.

For example, too much iron can cause nausea, abdominal discomfort, and constipation, Mirchandani says, while excess vitamin A can cause toxicity, potentially leading to issues with the hair and skin, susceptibility to fracture, high pressure inside the skull, and enlarged liver or spleen, per the Cleveland Clinic. The risk of these effects increases when individuals combine different multivitamins and supplements. “In general, women should avoid doubling up on multivitamins or taking extra doses to compensate for perceived nutritional gaps,” Mirchandani says.

Dietary supplements are products intended to supplement the diet. They are not medicines and are not intended to treat, diagnose, mitigate, prevent, or cure diseases. Be cautious about taking dietary supplements if you are pregnant or nursing.
