But for many professionals, peace does not last until Monday morning. By Sunday afternoon, the mind has already returned to the office.

An unfinished presentation, a difficult conversation with the manager, an approaching deadline or simply the thought of another five-day workweek can turn a relaxing Sunday into an anxious countdown. This feeling is commonly described as the ‘Sunday scaries’ or Sunday anxiety.

And it is not necessarily about disliking Mondays. Sometimes, it is about being unable to switch off from work even when the working week is technically over.

IT STARTS BEFORE THE OFFICE ALARM RINGS

A September 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, titled ‘The Sunday Blues: A qualitative exploration of manifestations, contributing factors, and coping strategies among employees’, examined the experiences of 26 employees in the Netherlands.

Researchers found that Sunday anxiety was not limited to feeling low about the weekend ending. Participants described a combination of anxiety, stress, fatigue, repetitive worrying, procrastination, and social withdrawal.

The study identified anticipated workplace challenges, unfinished responsibilities, job insecurity and an imbalance between professional and personal life as factors that could trigger or intensify these feelings.

In other words, employees may spend Sunday worrying about a Monday that has not even arrived.

Monday blues begin on Sunday: Understanding workplace anxiety among employees (AI-Generated image)

WHEN WORK FOLLOWS EMPLOYEES HOME

One of the biggest reasons weekends fail to feel restorative is the growing difficulty of mentally disconnecting from work.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, examining 60 full-time employees, found that continuing workplace-related social stress was associated with poorer psychological detachment on Sunday evening and poorer sleep that night.

The researchers, Diana Pereira and Achim Elfering, also found that psychological detachment partly mediated the relationship between workplace stress and certain sleep indicators.

This becomes particularly relevant in workplaces where employees continue receiving messages, emails and calls after office hours.

The growing expectation of constant availability is also changing workplace culture. Weekend emails, after-hours messages and increasingly long working weeks are blurring the boundaries between professional and personal lives, as explored in Work without pause: Have weekend emails and 70-hour weeks become normal?.

The problem extends beyond working hours. Digital notifications and blurred workplace boundaries are making it increasingly difficult for employees to mentally disconnect, a concern examined in Work-life balance is no longer about time. It is about design

IT IS NOT JUST MONDAY BLUES

The problem may also be connected to what employees expect from the coming week.

A study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology in February 2026, titled ‘Trajectories of psychological detachment over the weekend’, followed 153 employees across multiple weekends. Researchers identified three patterns of weekend detachment: consistently high or increasing detachment among 49 per cent, medium detachment among 35 per cent, and consistently low detachment among 16 per cent.

The researchers also examined how these patterns related to fatigue, sleep impairment and engagement at the beginning of the following week.

The findings underline an important distinction: not everyone gets the same opportunity to mentally recover over a weekend.

Monday blues begin on Sunday: Understanding workplace anxiety among employees (AI-Generated image)

CAN EMPLOYEES RECLAIM THEIR SUNDAYS?

The answer is not necessarily to spend Sunday preparing for every possible Monday challenge. Instead, employees can begin by creating a clearer boundary between work and personal time.

Planning the week’s priorities before logging off on Friday, avoiding unnecessary work notifications over the weekend, maintaining a relaxing Sunday routine and breaking Monday’s workload into manageable tasks can help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed.

The idea of easing into the working week rather than tackling every task at once is gaining attention. The concept of Bare Minimum Mondays encourages employees to prioritise essential tasks and approach Monday with a more manageable workload.

However, individual coping strategies cannot compensate for an unhealthy workplace. Employers also need to set realistic deadlines, respect employees’ time off and avoid creating an expectation of constant availability.

Sunday anxiety may be described casually as a weekend mood dip, but when it becomes a recurring experience that affects sleep, relationships and everyday functioning, it deserves attention.

After all, a weekend should not feel like a countdown to the next working week. Employees need time away from work not just physically, but mentally, too.

– Ends

The weekend is supposed to be the time when employees catch up on sleep, meet friends, pursue hobbies…

[35
298866,298863,163,85,46,522,523,298865,211720,298864,298860,298861,298862,8985,10974,17003
post-663693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mental-health","tag-bare-minimum-mondays","tag-employee-mental-health","tag-health","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-mental-health","tag-mentalhealth","tag-monday-blues","tag-psychological-detachment","tag-sleep-impairment","tag-sunday-anxiety","tag-sunday-scaries","tag-weekend-emails","tag-work-life-balance","tag-workplace-stress","tag-workplace-trends
["GET
