Opportunity, which explored Mars from 2004 to 2018, had stopped at 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers), the farthest any vehicle had gone on another world.

Perseverance got there in about five and a half years, while Opportunity needed almost 15. The rover picked its own route for more than 90 percent of the distance, but planners on Earth still set the points it drives between.

Sol 2,006 near Lac de Charmes

The record came on the 2,006th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. A navigation camera photographed the scene that day. It shows pale sand, broken slabs of rock and wheel tracks running toward a rising slope.

The rover was heading for an area the team calls “Idubi.” Its route crossed a region nicknamed “Lac de Charmes,” just off the western rim of the crater.

Animated orbital map of the route Perseverance has driven from its 2021 landing to Oct. 11, 2026, the day it passed Opportunity’s off-world driving record. Video: JPLraw (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory)

According to NASA’s mission blog, this may be some of the oldest terrain ever explored in the solar system. Its equivalents on Earth were erased long ago by erosion and plate tectonics. At Idubi, the science team hopes to find traces of ancient hydrothermal systems.

Steven Lee is project manager for the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California.

He noted that the original mission called for no more than 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) of driving, a figure the rover has now passed by a wide margin.

Thinking while driving

Most of the distance came from a self-driving system called AutoNav. While the rover rolls, it photographs the ground ahead and builds a 3D map of hazards. Then it plots a path between waypoints chosen by rover planners on Earth.

The team calls this “thinking while driving.” In an official NASA video from 2022, JPL rover driver Tyler Del Sesto explained that earlier rovers like Curiosity had to stop, take pictures and process them before picking a safe path.

“We give it specific stops along the route, but it chooses how to get there,” he said.

Spirit and Opportunity drove only about 5 percent of their distance with their early autonomous system. Sojourner, NASA’s first Mars rover, judged the path ahead from 20 measurement points.

Perseverance processes 600,000 with every look and has covered up to 1,351 feet (412 meters) in a single sol.

Navigation camera images of Perseverance’s record single-sol drive of 1,350.7 feet (411.7 meters) on June 19, 2025, combined with rover data in a 3D virtual reconstruction. Video: JPLraw (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory)

In February 2026, JPL said the rover could now find its own position with Mars Global Localization. The software matches navigation camera panoramas to orbital maps. It takes about two minutes and places the rover within about 10 inches (25 centimeters).

Vandi Verma, chief engineer of robotics operations for the mission, compared it to “giving the rover GPS.” With it, Perseverance learned to find its own way around Mars without waiting a day for mapping experts.

In a December 2025 test, the rover completed drives with waypoints planned by generative AI instead of human operators.

Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity

Sojourner was about the size of a microwave oven. It covered about 330 feet (100 meters) during its 83-sol mission in 1997.

Distances driven by rovers on the Moon and Mars. Spirit logged 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) before it stopped in the Martian winter of 2010. In 2024, the twin rovers marked 20 years since landing.

Opportunity kept rolling for 5,111 sols. According to NASA, it passed a marathon distance of 26.219 miles (42.195 kilometers) in 2015. A planet-wide dust storm covered its site in June 2018. Its last signal reached Earth on June 10.

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater in 2012 and is still working. In its record announcement, NASA put Curiosity’s total at more than 23.65 miles (38.07 kilometers).

Apollo 17 and Lunokhod 2

The record also covers drives on the Moon, where Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt covered 22.2 miles (35.7 kilometers) in their lunar rover in 1972. The Soviet Union’s robotic Lunokhod 2 drove 24.2 miles (39 kilometers) in 1973.

Perseverance passed both marks earlier in its trip. Opportunity had also beaten them during its own travels.

Mark Maimone is deputy team chief for robotic operations on Perseverance. He said the rover broke the record “by making its own decisions about the path.” He added that “Perseverance is a better driver than the one that landed, and we’re not done.”

Glare still ends afternoon drives

When Perseverance is heading toward the Sun, glare in the navigation cameras forces the team to stop by mid-afternoon, Maimone said.

The team wants to teach the rover to see past that glare, which Maimone said would give every rover that follows a longer working day.

Human planners on Earth still pick the waypoints for routine drives, so AutoNav does not choose where the rover goes on them.

Lee expects the record to keep growing for many years, since all of the rover’s mobility systems still work and extended lifespan tests on the ground have come back favorable.

In December 2025, JPL reported that the rotary actuators turning the wheels were certified for at least another 37 miles (60 kilometers), with nearly all subsystems judged able to work until at least 2031.

Because Perseverance and Curiosity are both still moving, the totals in NASA’s comparison are only a snapshot of Oct. 11.

Toward Idubi and Rainbow Falls

NASA approved the first mission extension, which began in October 2026 and runs to about the end of 2028. Perseverance has collected 29 rock and regolith samples. They come from the crater floor, an old river delta and the crater rim.

On its way up, the rover found a potential biosignature at a rock called Cheyava Falls. On the rim, it has studied rocks made by impacts about 4 billion years ago.

After Lac de Charmes, the rover will follow the rim south toward Rainbow Falls. That block of ancient crust is 328 feet (100 meters) wide and was pushed up by the impact that made Jezero.

The navigation camera photo from Oct. 11 shows wheel tracks pressed into the sand on the day the record fell. Every drive since then has added to a distance no other vehicle has reached on another world.

The information was obtained from NASA Science.

—–

Like what you read? Subscribe to our newsletter for engaging articles, exclusive content, and the latest updates.

Check us out on EarthSnap, a free app brought to you by Eric Ralls and Earth.com.

—–

On Oct. 11, 2026, NASA’s Perseverance rover reached 28.10 miles on Mars, passing Opportunity’s off-world record, mostly by…

[23
85,46,141,145
post-663807","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-space","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-science","tag-space
["GET
