The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average each fell less than 1% on the week, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2%.

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.54% while the Topix declined 0.74%. Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 was 0.24% lower.

The week got off to a good start after Anthropic publicly filed for an IPO, which boosted AI-linked stocks. However, selling pressure resumed later in the week amid signs that capex spending could be abating after both Alphabet and Microsoft posted lower-than-expected capex forecasts. Amazon also left its full-year capex guidance unchanged.

Still, 3Fourteen Research’s Warren Pies isn’t too concerned, pointing to a ramp-up in forward earnings estimates and adding that “there’s a lot to like” about Anthropic’s S-1 filing.

“I just don’t see anything broken with the AI trade fundamentally,” he said on CNBC’s “Closing Bell Overtime” on Friday. “Technicals are another story.”

The tech-heavy Nasdaq and the S&P 500 logged a losing October amid AI spending concerns, with the Nasdaq suffering its worst losses since March 2025. The Dow, however, rose almost 2% as investors rotated into defensive areas like healthcare.

“Rather than running for the hills amid heightened AI risks, investors are seeing plenty of return potential in other types of stocks,” Mike Dickson, Horizon’s head of research and quantitative strategies, said in a note last week.

Dickson added that while this week’s midterm elections “have some investors worried that changes in Washington, D.C., could impact the markets, it’s important to remember that stocks tend to stay steady regardless of which party gains control of Congress.”

The elections will be held on Tuesday, when Democrats are expected to take control of the House of Representatives, while Senate control remains uncertain.

Investors are also awaiting October’s nonfarm payrolls reading, which is scheduled for release on Friday and is expected to show an increase of 55,000 jobs on the month, according to economists polled by Dow Jones.

In addition to the closely watched monthly jobs report, a fresh round of earnings releases is also due this week. “Magnificent Seven” member Apple is scheduled to report after the bell on Monday. McDonald’s and Qualcomm are slated to report later in the week.

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., Oct.…

[5
1684,356,940,941,114,357,1761,1012,85,145063,46,190,43414,355,1763,1008,33176,1762,3310,28317,1760,1032
post-664103","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-alphabet-class-a","tag-amazon-com-inc","tag-apple-inc","tag-breaking-news-markets","tag-business","tag-business-news","tag-dow-jones-fut-sep25","tag-dow-jones-industrial-average","tag-il","tag-invesco-qqq-trust","tag-israel","tag-markets","tag-mcdonalds-corp","tag-microsoft-corp","tag-nasdaq-100-fut-sep25","tag-nasdaq-composite","tag-qualcomm-inc","tag-sp-500-fut-sep25","tag-sp-500-index","tag-spdr-sp-500-etf-trust","tag-stock-markets","tag-united-states
["GET
