\n\tInde Navarrette<\/a>, the breakout star of Focus Features\u2019 horror blockbuster \u201cObsession<\/a>,\u201d will receive the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, Variety has learned exclusively.<\/p>\n

\n\tNavarrette joins the growing list of honorees that already includes Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Pen\u00e9lope Cruz and Edward Norton, who share the Vanguard Award for \u201cThe Invite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film premiered to rave reviews, holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has grossed more than $500 million worldwide, the largest gor a Focus Features release. It recently picked up a Gotham Award nomination, and critics have consistently singled out Navarrette\u2019s gripping and emotionally charged turn, which has put her firmly in the Oscar race for best actress.<\/p>\n

\n\tHorror has historically struggled to break through with Academy voters, but has seemingly made a positive, more inclusive turn in recent years with \u201cThe Substance,\u201d \u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cWeapons.\u201d A Palm Springs honor is a critical stop on the Oscar campaign trail. The Rising Star Award itself has a strong track record as an Oscar bellwether. Past recipients include Ariana Grande for \u201cWicked,\u201d Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet for \u201cCall Me by Your Name,\u201d Alicia Vikander for \u201cThe Danish Girl,\u201d Jennifer Lawrence for \u201cWinter\u2019s Bone,\u201d Anna Kendrick for \u201cUp in the Air\u201d and Scarlett Johansson for \u201cLost in Translation.\u201d Grande, Chalamet, Vikander, Lawrence and Kendrick all went on to Academy Award nominations for those performances, with Vikander taking home the supporting actress statuette.<\/p>\n

\n\tWritten, edited and directed by Curry Barker, the indie thriller follows Bear, a hopeless romantic who breaks the mysterious One Wish Willow to win over his crush, only to find that getting exactly what he wants comes at a sinister price. Navarrette plays Nikki Freeman opposite Michael Johnston, Megan Lawless, Cooper Tomlinson and Andy Richter.<\/p>\n

\n\tNavarrette first broke out in the fourth and final season of Netflix\u2019s teen drama \u201c13 Reasons Why\u201d before landing a series regular role on The CW\u2019s superhero drama \u201cSuperman & Lois.\u201d She made her Sundance debut in 2020 opposite Sienna Miller and Diego Luna in \u201cWander Darkly.\u201d<\/p>\n
