If you were to do an impression of a rocker from this era, you’d have to hit certain points to be convincing, and we all know what those are, whether we can pinpoint them or not. The three alt-rockers below helped to define the 1990s sound. Without these artists, the decade wouldn’t have the overall impression it earned.

Kurt Cobain

 Play video

We have to get in a grunge icon, for sure. Grunge was an important piece of the 1990s puzzle. Artists in this genre lived on the fringes, speaking to counterculture like alt-rockers of different generations. Kurt Cobain led the pack of grunge pioneers.

 Videos by American Songwriter

Cobain’s voice is specific. It’s gravelly, a tad whiny, and full of vitriolic power. He set a standard for what grunge should sound like. Many of his acolytes followed suit, trying to recreate the magic he had innately in the 1990s. When we hear Cobain’s voice today, we’re instantly transported back to that era. He’s so tied to the fabric of the decade that it’s impossible to separate the two.

Alanis Morissette

 Play video

If you wanted to emulate a 1990s female rocker, your mind would likely go straight to Alanis Morissette. This alt-rock-pop crossover artist had a distinctly 1990s attitude. She has never been afraid to be rough around the edges, delivering songs that are cathartic releases for listeners.

Her most famous 1990s song, “You Oughta Know”, is a conventional but classic example of her influence on the decade. “And I’m here, to remind you / Of the mess you left when you went away / It’s not fair, to deny me,” the familiar lyrics read. We all know this song. It’s become emblematic of the decade as a whole, especially in the alt-rock scene.

Thom Yorke

 Play video

On the slightly more pristine side of alt-rock, Thom Yorke stands out. Radiohead’s electronic tinges brought a new wave into rock music that would continue throughout the 1990s and 2000s. His emotional vocals helped blaze that trail, just as much as the band’s instrumentals did.

From “Creep” to “No Surprises” and “Fake Plastic Trees”, Yorke’s voice is in the very DNA of the 1990s rock scene. Many subsequent bands took notes from this group, pushing their own version of what Radiohead revolutionized. If you wanted to drum up some 1990s nostalgia as a band today, you could do your best Yorke impression and earn it easily.

The 1990s alt-rock scene had a distinct sound.
