Actor Hong Jin-gi has shed the coarse beard and dark makeup of his character Maeng Sook-soo from the drama ‘Bon Appetit, Your Majesty’. In a recent interview, the actor, looking bright and youthful in traditional Hanbok, shared behind-the-scenes stories, revealing a personality starkly different from his chic and prickly on-screen persona. According to an OSEN report, Hong Jin-gi discussed his dedication to the role, which included a surprising commitment to authenticity.<\/p>\n
A Dedication to the Craft<\/p>\n
In ‘Bon Appetit, Your Majesty’, Hong played Maeng Sook-soo (also known as Maeng Man-soo), the ambitious second-in-command of the royal kitchen who dreams of becoming the head chef. To convincingly portray this “nearly perfect” character, who is already a top chef, Hong revealed he took a part-time job at a Chinese restaurant. “I didn’t want to look clumsy,” he explained. “I felt that if I didn’t have a professional demeanor, the character wouldn’t be persuasive”. He learned not just knife skills but also the details of kitchen management, which he believed were essential to bringing Maeng Sook-soo to life.<\/p>\n
The Pains of Authenticity<\/p>\n
His dedication came with physical costs. Hong admitted to cutting his hands frequently on set while trying to portray his character’s complex emotions of anxiety and jealousy through his knife work. He also insisted on performing most of his own stunts, including a challenging scene that required finely chopping green onions, which even surprised the camera crew. “I was greedy and wanted to do it all myself,” he said, proud of applying the skills he learned.<\/p>\n
A New Chapter<\/p>\n
Hong reflected that the role was a significant challenge, but it proved to himself and others that he could take on new and different characters.
