The data shows that for the first time on record, renewables generated more electricity than coal worldwide.

Global electricity demand rose 2.6 per cent in the first six months of 2025, adding 369 terawatt hours (TWh) compared to the same period in 2024. Solar alone accounted for 83 per cent of this increase, with record generation growth of 306 TWh, a 31 per cent year-on-year rise.

Ember said solar and wind power grew fast enough to meet rising demand and displace fossil generation. Coal generation fell 0.6 per cent (-31 TWh), while gas dropped 0.2 per cent (-6 TWh). The decline was partly offset by a small rise in other fossil sources, leading to an overall fossil generation drop of 0.3 per cent (-27 TWh). Consequently, global power sector emissions fell by 0.2 per cent.

“We are seeing the first signs of a crucial turning point,” said Małgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, Senior Electricity Analyst at Ember. “Solar and wind are now growing fast enough to meet the world’s growing appetite for electricity. This marks the beginning of a shift where clean power is keeping pace with demand growth.”

In total, renewables supplied 5,072 TWh of global electricity in H1 2025, up from 4,709 TWh a year earlier, overtaking coal at 4,896 TWh, down by 31 TWh year-on-year.

Ember said the 0.3 per cent decline in fossil fuel generation, while modest, was a “significant signal” that solar and wind growth can now meet total demand increases in several regions. The report suggested that as the expansion of renewables continues, fossil power’s share will decline further.

Regional trends: China and India lead fossil decline
The world’s four largest economies — China, India, the US, and the EU — continued to shape the global power mix.China remained the largest driver of clean energy growth, adding more solar and wind capacity than the rest of the world combined. The country’s fossil generation fell 2 per cent (-58.7 TWh) in the first half of 2025, driven by record renewable output.

India’s fossil generation also declined sharply, with coal down 3.1 per cent (-22 TWh) and gas down 34 per cent (-7.1 TWh). Clean power generation in India grew more than three times faster than demand, which rose only 1.3 per cent (+12 TWh) compared to 9 per cent (+75 TWh) in the same period last year.

In contrast, fossil generation rose in the United States and the European Union. In the US, power demand grew faster than clean energy supply, leading to an uptick in fossil generation. In the EU, weaker wind and hydro output led to increased reliance on coal and gas.

‘Renewables driving global power system forward’
Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council, said: “This analysis confirms what we are witnessing on the ground: solar and wind are no longer marginal technologies—they are driving the global power system forward. The fact that renewables have overtaken coal for the first time marks a historic shift. But to lock in this progress, governments and industry must accelerate investment in solar, wind, and battery storage, ensuring that clean, affordable, and reliable electricity reaches communities everywhere.”

Ember said that with half the world already past the peak of fossil generation, clean power has the potential to keep pace with demand globally. However, it noted that progress remains uneven and dependent on policy support and investment.

Wiatros-Motyka added: “As costs of technologies continue to fall, now is the perfect moment to embrace the economic, social and health benefits that come with increased solar, wind and batteries.”

Published On Oct 13, 2025 at 07:01 AM IST

Join the community of 2M+ industry professionals.
Subscribe to Newsletter to get latest insights & analysis in your inbox.

All about ETEnergyworld industry right on your smartphone!

Coal generation fell 0.6%, while gas dropped 0.2%.New Delhi: Solar and wind power outpaced the growth in global…

[22
51367,242,51365,51364,85,46,51366,51362,141,51363
post-72025","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-clean-power-generation","tag-environment","tag-fossil-fuel-generation-decline","tag-global-electricity-demand","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-renewable-energy-capacity","tag-renewables-surpass-coal","tag-science","tag-solar-and-wind-power-growth
["GET
