Diane Keaton\u2019s surprising death<\/a> has her ex, Al Pacino, wondering about what could have been, the Daily Mail<\/a> reported on Sunday, October 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking back, Al admits the love of his life<\/a> was Diane,\u201d a source told the outlet of the pair, who began dating on and off in 1974 after filming 1972\u2019s The Godfather.<\/p>\n

The feeling seems to have been mutual. \u201cFor me the Godfathers, all three of them, were about one thing \u2014 Al. It was as simple as that,\u201d the Annie Hall actress wrote in her 2011 memoir, Then Again, per the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But after filming the final movie in their famous mobster trilogy in 1990, Keaton gave the Scent of a Woman actor, 85, a marriage<\/a> ultimatum.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoor Al, he never wanted it. Poor me, I never stopped insisting,\u201d the Oscar winner, who died<\/a> at 79 on Saturday, October 11, wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, \u2018If it\u2019s meant to be, it\u2019s never too late for a do-over.\u2019 But sadly, now it is,\u201d the source told the Daily Mail, adding that the pair \u201cnever spoke\u201d even though they lived near one another in L.A.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he will forever regret he didn\u2019t make his move when he had the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pacino, who has four children, never married.<\/p>\n
