US President Donald Trump behind a peace sign in Sharm El-Sheikh.Photographer: Suzanne Plunkett\/Pool\/Getty Images<\/p>\n(Bloomberg) — President Donald Trump pressed world leaders gathered at a summit on Gaza\u2019s future to ensure the US-led truce between Israel and Hamas turns into a lasting peace, hailing the agreement as a \u201cnew beginning\u201d for the war-torn region.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, for the first time anyone can remember, we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to put the old feuds and bitter hatreds behind us,\u201d Trump said in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh.\u201d \u201cTogether we\u2019re going to forge a magnificent, great and enduring peace.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s whirlwind trip, which also included a stop in Israel, heightened optimism for ending the two-year-long war between Israel and Hamas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTogether, we\u2019ve achieved what everybody said was impossible. At long last we have peace in the Middle East,\u201d Trump said. \u201cNow the rebuilding begins.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yet the nascent ceasefire remains fragile, with many key details left to be worked out. Trump said food and aid has begun to flow into Gaza, which has been devastated by the conflict. \u201cNumerous countries of great wealth\u201d have pledged reconstruction funds, Trump added, though he did not name them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Almost three dozen world leaders from Europe and the Middle East attended the summit, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Qatar\u2019s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Trump cast the attendance list as a show of force, saying \u201call the momentum now\u201d is behind his 20-point plan for peace. Still, at the end of his speech, the US president openly solicited leaders to join the yet-to-be-formed \u201cboard of peace\u201d he wants to govern Gaza in place of Hamas, designated a terrorist group by the US and European Union.<\/p>\n
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined an invitation to participate in the summit, citing an upcoming Jewish holiday.<\/p>\n
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Gaza\u2019s next steps, Trump sought to frame the truce as an historic achievement and urged world leaders to help ensure no party undermined it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Trump conveyed that he saw the deal as the final say on a sectarian conflict that has lasted generations during a speech to Israel\u2019s parliament, where he received a hero\u2019s welcome. Last week\u2019s deal paused the fighting in Gaza to allow the release of the 20 remaining living hostages held in the Palestinian territory. They were freed on Monday, as were almost 2,000 Palestinians in Israeli jails.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve won. Now it\u2019s time to translate these victories against terrorists on the battlefield into the ultimate prize of peace and prosperity for the entire Middle East,\u201d Trump said to Israeli lawmakers.<\/p>\n
Trump also urged Gazans to focus on \u201crestoring the fundamentals of stability, safety, dignity, and economic development, so they can finally have the better life that their children really do deserve after all these decades of horror.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president even predicted Iran, an avowed foe of Israel where the US bombed nuclear sites earlier this year \u201cwill come along\u201d in joining his peace initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Officials at the Egypt summit were expected to discuss thorny issues about Gaza\u2019s future, such as persuading Hamas to disarm and ensuring the militant group agrees to play no part in the governance of the territory, which it\u2019s ruled since 2007. They had also planned to talk about some countries sending peacekeepers to Gaza and how to go about rebuilding the territory after two years of devastating war.<\/p>\n
Sisi said he is aiming to host a summit on Gaza\u2019s reconstruction in November and would like to have Trump present.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s plenty of skepticism the truce will last. Almost as soon as Trump finished his speech \u2014 mostly met with rapturous applause from Israeli lawmakers \u2014 the country\u2019s defense minister, Israel Katz, said Hamas had failed to meet a commitment to release the remains of all dead hostages by Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny delay or deliberate avoidance will be considered a gross violation of the agreement and will be responded to accordingly,\u201d said Katz.<\/p>\n
As of last week\u2019s agreement, 48 hostages \u2014 all but one of them male \u2014 were still held in Gaza, with 20 of them alive.<\/p>\n
There were scenes of jubilation in Israel as the 20 living captives were freed, as well as among Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank as prisoners were released.<\/p>\n
Israel has pulled back troops from most populated areas in Gaza and has agreed to allow much more aid into the Mediterranean territory, home to around 2.2 million people.<\/p>\n
Almost all have been displaced since the war began and the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 67,000 of them have been killed. The Israeli military says almost 470 of its soldiers have died in combat in Gaza.<\/p>\n
Hamas triggered the war with an attack on Israel from Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and abducting another 250.<\/p>\n
