Disney recently revived its lucrative scheme to make live-action versions of all its animated hits\u2014the tepid reaction<\/a> to Snow White was all but forgotten with the raging success of Lilo & Stitch<\/a>, and Tangled (possibly starring Scarlett Johansson<\/a> in the villain role) is back on. But don\u2019t expect one of the biggest non-Disney animated films ever to follow that same path: KPop Demon Hunters intends to stay animated.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the BBC<\/a>, KPop co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans shot down the idea of the record-breaking Netflix musical<\/a> getting a live-action remake.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere [are] so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation,\u201d Kang said. \u201cIt\u2019s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn\u2019t work for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Appelhans is of the same mind. \u201cOne of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes,\u201d he said. \u201cRumi can be this goofy comedian and then [be] singing and doing a spinning back-kick a second later and then freefalling through the sky. The joy of animation is how far you can push and elevate what\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the duo did address the other million-dollar question that KPop Demon Hunters\u2018 many fans have been asking with increased urgency: sequel when??<\/p>\n

Kang told the BBC she\u2019s \u201cexcited for the potential for more stories,\u201d though of course there\u2019s nothing official to announce yet. Appelhans again was in agreement: \u201cThere\u2019s definitely more we can do with these characters in this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd whatever it will be,\u201d Kang added, \u201cit will be a story that deserves to be a sequel, and it will be something that we want to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
