The company announced that it would add <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/following-teen-suicide-openai-explores-automatic-underage-user-restrictions-151948711.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:parental controls and automatic age detection features;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parental controls and automatic age detection features<\/a> in September, and it seems like a benefit of sorting out children from adults is an ability to offer more freedom in what ChatGPT can show users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">&#8220;In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our &#8216;treat adult users like adults&#8217; principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults,&#8221; Altman says. Some avid ChatGPT users already regularly manipulate the chatbot to engage in NSFW conversations, but Altman&#8217;s announcement sounds more like tacit approval from OpenAI that those use-cases are okay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">The company signaled something similar during its <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/spotify-canva-and-other-apps-can-now-connect-to-chatgpt-194830116.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:DevDay 2025 announcements;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DevDay 2025 announcements<\/a>, when its new <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/developers.openai.com\/apps-sdk\/app-developer-guidelines#:~:text=Support%20for%20mature%20(18%2B)%20experiences%20will%20arrive%20once%20appropriate%20age%20verification%20and%20controls%20are%20in%20place.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:guidelines;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">guidelines<\/a> for developers creating apps for ChatGPT shared that &#8220;support for mature (18+) experiences will arrive once appropriate age verification and controls are in place.&#8221; After December, it sounds like adult interactions with ChatGPT or apps the chatbot can access are fair game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">All of these changes are being made in the shadow of disturbing stories of the seemingly negative influence ChatGPT can have on users, including <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/26\/technology\/chatgpt-openai-suicide.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the death of 16-year old Adam Raine;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">the death of 16-year old Adam Raine<\/a>, who allegedly used ChatGPT to plan his own suicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Reducing the chatbot&#8217;s sycophantic qualities with the <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/gpt-5-is-here-and-its-free-for-everyone-170001066.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:release of GPT-5;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">release of GPT-5<\/a> was one of the ways OpenAI tried to address the mental health impacts of ChatGPT, along with built-in notifications to <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/chatgpt-will-now-remind-you-to-take-breaks-following-mental-health-concerns-180221008.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:remind users to take breaks;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remind users to take breaks<\/a>.
