{"id":76084,"date":"2025-10-15T11:28:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T11:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/76084\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T11:28:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T11:28:07","slug":"spacex-veteran-lays-out-impulse-spaces-roadmap-for-making-deliveries-to-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/76084\/","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX Veteran Lays Out Impulse Space&#8217;s Roadmap for Making Deliveries to the Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.impulsespace.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Impulse Space<\/a>, the California-based venture founded by veteran SpaceX engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/thomas-mueller-2094513b\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Mueller<\/a>, today unveiled its proposed architecture for delivering medium-sized payloads to the moon by as early as 2028.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impulsespace.com\/updates\/to-the-moon-and-beyond-how-impulse-can-deliver-more-mass-to-the-lunar-surface\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blog posting<\/a>, Mueller said the plan would fill a \u201ccritical gap in lunar cargo delivery capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mueller was Employee No. 1 at Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX, and is widely credited as <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@spaceinfo.club\/tom-mueller-the-rocket-scientist-behind-spacexs-success-ec1cd29c424f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the rocket scientist behind SpaceX\u2019s success<\/a>. He left the company in 2020 to found Impulse Space, which is focusing on ways to improve mobility in space.<\/p>\n<p>Impulse\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impulsespace.com\/mira\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mira space tug<\/a> already has demonstrated its capabilities in two LEO Express missions that took place in low Earth orbit in 2023 and 2025. The company is also developing a kick stage known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impulsespace.com\/helios\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helios<\/a>, which would be capable of sending payloads to higher orbits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, Impulse\u2019s mission has unfolded in the orbits closest to Earth, but our work to improve in-space mobility doesn\u2019t end at geostationary orbit,\u201d Mueller wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s why we&#8217;re unveiling some of our initial plans for the next stages of our roadmap, starting with the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The roadmap envisions creating a lunar lander that would piggyback on Impulse\u2019s Helios kick stage. In the first stage of the journey, the mated payloads would be launched into low Earth orbit on a medium- or heavy-lift rocket. Then Helios would fire up its engine for a weeklong cruise from Earth orbit to low lunar orbit. The last stage of the journey calls for the lander to separate from Helios and descend to the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller said the lander would fill a gap in the market for lunar deliveries, in the range of 0.5 to 13 tons of payload. \u201cThese sorts of deliveries could include things like a lunar terrain vehicle, rovers, communication relay systems, power generators and habitation modules,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a niche between the small-scale deliveries that can be made by spacecraft such as Astrobotic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrobotic.com\/lunar-delivery\/landers\/griffin-lander\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Griffin lander<\/a> (625 kilograms) and Intuitive Machines\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuitivemachines.com\/nova-c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nova-C lander<\/a> (130 kilograms) on one hand, and crew-capable landers such as SpaceX\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> (100 tons) and Blue Origin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/blue-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon Mark 2<\/a> (30 tons) on the other hand.<\/p>\n<p>For what it\u2019s worth, Blue Origin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/blue-moon\/mark-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon Mark 1<\/a> cargo lander is designed to send up to 3 tons of payload, which sits within the mass range that Mueller mentioned. Blue Origin is expected to launch its first Mark 1 mission to the moon next year.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller said the Helios kick stage \u201cis already well into development, with the first flight slated for late next year.\u201d Impulse has also begun work on the engine for the lunar lander. That engine will use a nitrous and ethane bipropellant, \u201cthe same combination used successfully in space on Mira,\u201d Mueller said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this Helios and Impulse-made lander combination, we estimate delivering up to 6 tons of payload mass to the moon (across two missions) per year starting in 2028 at a cost-effective price point,\u201d Mueller wrote. \u201cEach Helios + lander combo would take approximately 3 tons of cargo to the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mueller said Impulse was getting into the lunar delivery business to support \u201ca sustained human presence in space \u2014 which, in turn, could function as a staging ground for future missions deeper into the solar system.\u201d He also noted that the moon offered potentially valuable resources such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmiclog.com\/tag\/helium-3\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">helium-3<\/a> that could be sent back down to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>NASA and the White House have made it clear that \u201creturning a human presence to the moon is imperative to maintaining and expanding American leadership in space,\u201d Mueller noted. Although Mueller didn\u2019t directly address whether NASA has taken an interest in what Impulse plans to offer, it\u2019s likely that the company will be eligible for a healthy share of cargo delivery contracts if it follows through.<\/p>\n<p>The moon isn\u2019t the only off-Earth destination that Impulse Space has targeted. Three years ago, Impulse and Relativity Space <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relativityspace.com\/press-release\/2022\/7\/19\/impulse-space-and-relativity-space-announce-first-commercial-mission-to-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced a partnership that\u2019s aimed at sending a lander to Mars by 2029<\/a>.
