{"id":80104,"date":"2025-10-17T06:57:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T06:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/80104\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T06:57:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T06:57:06","slug":"call-to-protect-endangered-spider-found-in-plymouth-quarry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/80104\/","title":{"rendered":"Call to protect endangered spider found in Plymouth quarry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Buglife said not much was known about the horrid ground-weaver spider because of its scarcity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The invertebrate experts described them as dwarf money spiders with bodies measuring 0.12in (3mm) and hairy legs which inspired their name since the Latin origin of the word &#8216;horrid&#8217; is &#8216;bristly&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They said the spider had been discovered as new to science in 1989 by RA Stevens.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The charity&#8217;s head of operations Andrew Whitehouse said the council had an &#8220;international responsibility to do everything that it can to protect its habitat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Plymouth City Council spokesman said it was in &#8220;direct discussions with the landowner to remind them of their responsibilities under planning law&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Buglife said not much was known about the horrid ground-weaver spider because of its scarcity.
