\n\tIt was the announcement<\/a> heard \u2019round the internet: Leighton Meester<\/a> was joining the second season<\/a> of Nobody Wants This<\/a>, the breakout hit starring her husband Adam Brody<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was honestly [co-showrunner<\/a>] Jenni Konner<\/a>\u2018s idea and it was brilliant of her,\u201d creator Erin Foster<\/a> told The Hollywood Reporter at the show\u2019s season 2 premiere of how the casting came about. \u201cI\u2019d just seen Leighton at the SAG Awards \u2014 we were like she\u2019s so cute, she\u2019s so sweet, she\u2019s so funny, and then I told Jenni how great she was and she was like, \u2018Let\u2019s put her in.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the show \u2014 which sees Brody\u2019s \u201cHot Rabbi\u201d Noah and Kristen Bell<\/a>\u2018s agnostic sex podcaster Joanne fall in love while trying to navigate their extreme differences \u2014 Meester appears as a mommy influencer who had childhood beef with Joanne. That means that most of her screen time is with Bell and her onscreen sister Justine Lupe, rather than with Brody. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s because the character was already written into the script without being cast at all,\u201d Foster explained, but the writers got crafty once Meester signed onto the role. \u201cWhen she said yes, I went back into the script \u2014 they didn\u2019t even have any scenes together so I gave them their little scene together and I really wanted him to say, \u2018She\u2019s not my type.\u2019 He says that in the episode and it just meant a lot to me to get to say something funny like that because I thought it could become a meme.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tFor his part, Brody said it \u201cwasn\u2019t a prerequisite\u201d for he and his wife to share scenes when the executive producers brought up the idea of Meester joining the show. He added, \u201cThe point was we got to drive to work together. I like that she was with the girls, the ladies.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSeason two explores Brody and Bell\u2019s characters in the first six months of their relationship as they more deeply get to know each other\u2019s friends, family and each other, as Brody also teased that he \u201cthought this season was very funny\u201d when he first got the scripts. <\/p>\n

\n\tAnd as for the reaction to the project \u2014 having become one of Netflix\u2019s biggest shows as well as landing Emmy nominations for best comedy series and its stars \u2014 Brody mused, \u201cIt\u2019s been the biggest thing that I\u2019ve been largely associated with in quite some time and that\u2019s always a surprise. You just never know if something is going to connect in a big way; you know if you like it, you know what you think about the quality, but that doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s going to hit and the timing is going to be right or the marketing is going to be right \u2014 it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019ll find an audience at all. So that\u2019s always a pleasant surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n
