Gerry Thornley and Nathan Johns will offer their opinions on what was a hugely disappointing afternoon for the Ireland team.

Ireland co-captain Sam Monaghan: “A lot of our errors they turned into tries. We will dust ourselves off and go again next week. System errors and execution on our behalf at times.

No arguments, better side won. Ireland will have been disappointed not to have scored a point but it is injuries to Stacey Flood, Edel McMahon and the head knock to Eve Higgins that will be more worrying with a view to next week’s quarterfinal. There will be a lot of bruised and tired Irish bodies. Ireland will play the winner of the final game of the pool stage between France and South Africa.

80 mins: A length of the pitch counter-attack from New Zealand leads to a try for replacement scrumhalf Maia Joseph. Holmes converts. Six tries for the world champions.

Fulltime: Ireland 0 New Zealand 40

78 mins: TRY Braxton Sorensen-McGee. The 18 year-old wing gets a hat-trick, lovely training ground wraparound move from a scrum inside the Irish 22. Holmes tags on a brilliant conversion.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 33

75 mins: New Zealand’s Sylvia Brunt is voted player of the match, recognising the 21-year-old’s carrying and tackling.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 26

74 mins: Ireland show character to keep the pressure on but despite a couple of five-metre lineouts and a penalty here and there they can’t get over the New Zealand line. The Kiwis have conceded far too many penalties not to have received a card for persistent infringing. New Zealand turn it over and go the length of the pitch for a try for fullback Holmes – Higgins won the initial footrace but as she went to gather the ball it spilled from her grasp – but a knock on from Miller sees the try ruled out. Higgins picked up a knock to the head in the incident so Parsons is back on the pitch.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 26

65 mins: Ferocious defence from New Zealand forces a penalty turnover near their own line. It started well for Ireland with a lovely chip from O’Brien to set up the field position but once again poor passing and questionable decision-making cost Ireland dearly.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 26

57 mins: TRY Braxton Sorensen-McGee. Right on cue New Zealand discover their mojo. Ireland get sucked in rather easily but it’s good handling from the Kiwis as the teenage Braxton Sorensen-McGee grabs her second try of the match and her fifth in the tournament. Holmes kicks a superb conversion. Ireland empty the remainder of the bench, Siobhan McCarthy, Sadhbh McGrath, Eimear Corri Fallon and scrumhalf Emily Lane are on.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 26

57 mins: It seems strange that Higgins has been relocated to fullback given that her power and footwork at least threatened New Zealand on the gain-line. New Zealand empty their bench, three changes to the pack but a sloppiness has crept into the performance of the world champions; balls not going to hand and an inability to take advantage of space and numbers out wide.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 19

50 mins: Cruel luck for Ireland. Moore with a brilliant turnover, O’Brien’s kick through looks well judged and with no one around to thwart the chasing Costigan, Irish supporters can only watch in horror as the ball bounces twice at right angles and goes into touch and goal.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 19

48 mins: New Zealand win a kicking tussle and from a lineout just outside the Irish 22 they should have had a fourth try but good work from Reilly, Costigan and Higgins along with a poor cross-kick allow Ireland to escape. Cliodhna Moloney MacDonald is on for Neve Jones at hooker.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 19

44 mins: That’s so much better from Ireland 19 phases, some lovely work from Niamh O’Dowd, Béibhinn Parson, Doyle, Higgins, Djougang but Reilly’s misplaced pass saw Ireland have to scramble to hang onto possession 15 metres behind the previous ruck. Edel McMahon (leg) picked up an injury in the sequence. Claire Boles will replace the Ireland co-captain. Anna McGann is on for Parsons.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 19

Ireland will look to find some playing rhythm because one suspects that New Zealand have a gear or two to go up.

Ireland’s bright opening quickly faded and thereafter New Zealand have dominated, physically bossed their opponents in most facets of the game. Three tries is a reasonable return for New Zealand’s dominance. They have been sharper in attack as a result of being able to get over the gain-line as they pleased, and have found the Irish defence to be sluggish in recognising the threat. It could get ugly from an Irish perspective in the second half.

In contrast Ireland have struggled to win any collisions and as a result have been vulnerable to having ball pinched at the breakdown or in desperation rather than design have kicked away possession. Stacey Flood’s foot injury hasn’t helped the cohesion and communication in the Irish three quarter line. Aside from centres Eve Higgins and Aoife Doyle, most Irish players are very much second best in the personal duels.

It’s like Ireland are playing the game half a second behind real time, in thought and deed.

Half-time: Ireland 0 New Zealand 19

New Zealand’s first try

36 mins: TRY, Braxton Sorensen-McGee. Soft again. Credit to the 18-year-old teenage New Zealand wing who finished with aplomb, but Ireland made a couple of poor decisions in defence. A primary concern is the manner in which Ireland had their pockets picked at a breakdown and just didn’t hustle quickly enough to try and negate the turnover. Holmes added the conversion.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 19

33 mins: New Zealand forced into a couple of changes in their pack because of injury and blood. Ireland get some ball and territory after New Zealand concede a couple of penalties, but O’Brien ends up kicking the ball away. Ireland certainly need to vary their game, but it’s got to be more subtle. New Zealand so aggressive in their line speed that there is space in behind and the grubber or chip kick seem better options. Ireland fullback Stacey Flood is going off with what appears a foot injury – it looked like friendly fire, an unfortunate clash that ended up with a foot issue – and will be replaced by Nancy McGillivray.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 12

The second New Zealand try

25 mins: Ireland looked shellshocked by the intensity of their opponents and after that brief, bright opening to the game have been very much second best, in all aspects of the contest.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 12

23 mins: Ireland are rather predictable and laboured in possession and that’s making it easy for Black Ferns in defence. Throw in some handling error and panicked passing and it’s a serious problem. Oh, and the discipline also. Too many penalties which are giving the Kiwis easy access to the Irish 22.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 12

18 mins: TRY Chryss Viliko. Ireland concede a penalty as they concede another line-break and then another, Campbell pinged for offside. New Zealand kick to the corner for a five-metre lineout. Sylvia Brunt powers over the gain-line and then prop Viliko swats aside the goal-line tacklers. Holmes had the conversion charged down.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 12

14 mins: TRY Stacey Waaka. Ireland win a scrum free-kick as New Zealand keep driving post the engage segment of the sequence but is a short-lived respite. Ireland get their defence all wrong from a ruck and New Zealand exploit the space for centre Stacey Waaka to score a try in the corner. Renee Holmes kicked the conversion.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 7

13 mins: New Zealand’s carrying game gets them into the Ireland 22 rather easily but a knock-on at a ruck 15-metres out gives Ireland a scrum. Scott Bemand’s side are losing the collisions on the gain-line. Ireland need to be smarter in their options when in possession but also more aggressive in contact.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 0

11 mins: Ireland are sloppy in possession offloading indiscriminately and twice the ball goes to deck. They are eventually penalised at a ruck for holding on.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 0

8 mins: Silly from Campbell as she blocks an opponent as Amee-Leigh Costigan ran the ball back from a loose kick. New Zealand get a free pass to the halfway line. New Zealand make headway with some powerful carries but are then penalised for sealing off at a ruck on the outskirts of the Irish 22

Ireland 0 New Zealand 0

5 mins: Ireland get a five-metre scrum from which Higgins makes a powerful surge for the line but from the ruck, Brittany Hogan runs into scrumhalf Aoibheann Reilly’s pass and knocks on.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 0

2 mins: Superb nine phase sequence from Ireland after a New Zealand clearance forces a penalty. Ireland go to the corner. Great break from Aoife Dalton in there two. Ireland work a pop move from the lineout to the front but Ruth Campbell is bundled into touch. Ireland turn over the Kiwi throw.

Ireland 0 New Zealand 0

We’re underway in Brighton.

Only six of the New Zealand team started the defeat to Ireland in Canada last November.

Two teams staring at each other.
