\n East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Trust (ESNEFT) head Nick Hulme announced his retirement to staff at the trust on Friday.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n The announcement came a week after Colchester Hospital received a damming report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), rating the facility as \u2018requires improvement\u2019.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n Responding to the news of Mr Hulme retiring,\u00a0Unison Eastern head of health Caroline Hennessy\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a shame Nick Hulme\u2019s decision to retire in ignominy didn\u2019t come sooner.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt will now be left to a new chief executive to pick up the pieces from his time in charge.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cThey should start by undoing the damaging decision to throw cleaners, caterers and other support staff out of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt\u2019s vital the trust starts to rebuild its relationship with staff if it\u2019s going to turn performance around.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n After an inspection in April, the CQC raised concerns about patients being treated in corridors, inappropriate care for mental health patients, and staff not having special training.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n Mr Hulme addressed the concerns raised in the report, saying action has been taken to improve the situation.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\n The recruitment process for Mr Hume\u2019s successor will be undertaken by a new chairperson, who has yet to be appointed.\n<\/p>\n
