The following story contains minor spoilers for the end of HBO’s Task. <\/p>\n

AND WITH THAT, we can officially declare the case closed. HBO’s Task concluded its seven-episode run<\/a> in a manner that was more than satisfying, taking all the threads that creator\/showrunner Brad Inglesby had been delicately threading from the very start of the show and tying them up with neat little knots. After the penultimate episode brought an end<\/a> to Robbie’s (Tom Pelphrey<\/a>) arc, the final episode showed us how things ultimately shook out with the task force, the Dark Hearts, Tom (Mark Ruffalo) and his family, and Maeve (Emilia Jones) and Robbie’s kids. <\/p>\n

And for a show about some pretty grisly criminal behavior, Task has an ending that’s ultimately pretty optimistic\u2014our heroes all do the right thing, the bad guys get what they deserve, and, at the end of the day, the sun is shining brightly in the Outside Philly area<\/a>. Despite the hardships that the world and happenstance sometimes force people (and some of our favorite characters) into, Inglesby seems to argue, good people want to do good things for other good people. And despite the evil very present in the world, and the bad choices many bad people choose to make, that goodness can still sometimes win out. <\/p>\n

Task ends with a neat little bow, and a satisfying end to our story. But this is television, and with successful television there’s always going to be a desire for more. Given that Tom is still alive and well\u2014and he’s still played by the always fantastic Ruffalo\u2014it seems natural to wonder whether there could be another case for him to pursue, another task force for him to lead, and another season of Task for us to watch. <\/p>\n

And to that we say: We’re not sure. <\/p>\n

Will Task get a season 2? \"task<\/p>\n

HBO<\/p>\n

As of right now, there are no plans for a season 2 of Task. That being said, there are some signs that the story could continue\u2014mainly, that HBO has the show competing in the ‘Drama’ category at the Golden Globes<\/a> rather than in the limited series category. <\/p>\n

That opens up the possibility for another Task season, but it could take many different forms. Could we follow Tom Brandis as he leads another task force for a different case? Could we follow another task force somewhere else entirely, White Lotus style, with a new movie star (following in Ruffalo’s and Kate Winslet’s footsteps) leading the way? That much we do not know.<\/p>\n

We do know, though, that creator Brad Inglesby loves telling his Outside Philly crime stories, and given his proven strong relationship with HBO, more of them seem possible. Does that mean some kind of Mare of Easttown and Task crossover? Perhaps. Does it mean another crime story set in the same geographical area? Also maybe. <\/p>\n

Time will tell\u2014but HBO has found a proven formula that works here, so it would be shocking if they didn’t return again one way or another. <\/p>\n
