On the Sept. 10 episode of the ABC talk show, the co-hosts \u2014 including Goldberg, Joy Behar<\/a>, Alyssa Farah Griffin<\/a>, Sunny Hostin<\/a> and Sara Haines<\/a> \u2014 didn\u2019t see eye to eye while discussing the actor\u2019s father Martin Sheen<\/a>\u2019s decision to turn in his son for a probation violation after a drug overdose in the late ’90s. During an interview on Good Morning America<\/a> earlier this week, Charlie said it was \u201cthe biggest betrayal you could possibly endure,\u201d<\/a> but added that he saw it \u201cas love eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n After showing a clip from the interview, Goldberg, 69, noted, \u201cIn his condition, of course he saw it as a betrayal\u201d before asking her cohosts, \u201cWould you think of it as a betrayal?\u201d<\/p>\n Behar, 82, agreed that it was a betrayal, explaining, \u201cIn my view, as an Italian mother, you do not turn your children in \u2014 especially if they have a drug problem or a mental health problem, you send them to a shrink or the hospital. You don\u2019t call the police. Martin Sheen made a big mistake. Your child is suffering, they have an illness, you do not send them to [jail]. Live on September 23, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.<\/p>\n However, Griffin, 36, saw the issue differently due to her own experience with her sister, who struggled with addiction, saying, \u201cI respectfully, totally disagree. My sister\u2019s a recovering addict, which I\u2019ve shared before. She\u2019s 12 years clean now. But the most loving thing a parent can do is tough love and get you off the streets and get you the health that you need. You are a danger to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n She explained that being behind bars \u201cultimately led to my sister getting sober, as she was forced off the streets for long enough. She then went into a long-term program after she got out of jail. But it\u2019s sometimes the one thing that will get people clean.\u201d<\/p>\n Haines, 47, also shared her belief that addicts \u201chave a single fix\u201d they\u2019re looking for, adding of Charlie, \u201cYou\u2019re not thinking clearly, you\u2019re not reasoning. Like he said, \u2018I eventually saw it as love.\u2019 It took him time, cleaning up, getting out of it to actually be able to look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut I don\u2019t call it tough love, I call it love love,\u201d she continued. \u201cI think sometimes parents bury the bodies, don\u2019t turn the kid in, enable the child\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t send your children to jail, you call the doctor!\u201d Behar responded and Hostin, 56, chimed in, \u201cI\u2019m with you, Joy. Sorry, I\u2019m with you. I agree with you, Joy. I think someone like Martin Sheen who has resources \u2014 there are people who have resources and have to call the police \u2014 but someone like Martin Sheen who has money, who had resources? You get your kid into a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n Goldberg then put a stop to the conversation, saying, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m going to shut this down right now. I\u2019m going to shut this down!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cUh oh, I\u2019m scared now!\u201d Behar jokingly replied, to which Goldberg said, \u201cWell, you should be! Because if you don\u2019t think they did everything? When I tell you, they did everything to get him straight.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis was the last straw,\u201d she explained of Charlie and his dad. \u201cBecause there was nothing left. And what they didn\u2019t want, and thank God it didn\u2019t happen, is they didn\u2019t want him to die on the street. So that\u2019s why that went down. We can B.S. you like nobody\u2019s business. \u2018I\u2019m going to get clean, I\u2019m never going to do this again.\u2019 And the next thing you know, your parent or the person that loves you is like, \u2018Oh my God, what am I going to do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSo sometimes you don\u2019t have any other choice,\u201d she added. \u201cWe all like to think if we just had the money, we could make stuff better.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMoney doesn\u2019t always help. \u2026 And Joy, if I was your child, I would appreciate that you didn\u2019t turn me in. But then you would be pissed at me because I would go behind your back and do something dumb.
