\u201cThe Late Show\u201d<\/a> host Stephen Colbert pushed back against former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre<\/a>\u2018s suggestion that Democrats\u2019 calls for Joe Biden to step aside in 2024 were a \u201cbetrayal\u201d of the former president.<\/p>\n

During their interview, Colbert inquired into Jean-Pierre\u2019s decision to leave the Democratic Party<\/a> this past summer. \u201cYou believe that the Democratic Party betrayed Joe Biden,\u201d Colbert noted, before asking, \u201cIn what way?\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Jean-Pierre, who became the first Black person and first openly LGBTQ person to serve as White House Press Secretary during Biden\u2019s presidential tenure, said she was appalled by the \u201cvisceral reaction\u201d people had to Biden\u2019s now-infamous debate performance against President Trump last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to remember this is personal to me, because I was at the podium almost every day talking about this,\u201d she noted. Colbert, however, countered, \u201cIt was personal to those of us who watched it, too, because it was a shock to our system to see that.\u201d The CBS host also noted that he helped raise over $20 million for Biden\u2019s 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seemed like a dramatically different person,\u201d Colbert said of watching Biden\u2019s pivotal debate performance. \u201cAt 81 years old, that\u2019s not entirely unexpected. You can imagine why people got so worried.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jean-Pierre then replied, \u201cNo one is saying that he didn\u2019t age. I\u2019m talking about did he have \u2014 the questions I was getting \u2014 the mental acuity? Was he able to govern? The man that I saw nearly every day was someone who was engaging, understood policy, and was always putting the American people first and it showed in what we were able to get done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think anybody questioned his heart or his policies,\u201d Colbert argued. \u201cBut it takes more than that to be the President of the United States. And in a moment of great pressure onstage, we saw someone shock us and worry us, and nothing could assuage that worry. So I don\u2019t think it was necessarily a \u2018betrayal\u2019 of Joe Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI disagree,\u201d Jean-Pierre responded. \u201cI saw every day a really ugly assault on someone who had 50-plus years of experience and who, again, objectively had done a good job as President of the United States, and it was heartbreaking to see that type of behavior.\u201d While Colbert noted that he could not fault the \u201cfactual basis\u201d of Jean-Pierre\u2019s comments or her personal feelings about Biden\u2019s presidency, he reiterated: \u201cWhat happened was the debate performance. Everything is downstream of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one is saying the debate performance wasn\u2019t shocking, wasn\u2019t a disappointment,\u201d Jean-Pierre conceded, to which Colbert remarked, \u201c\u2018Disappointment\u2019 is such a light term!\u201d Jean-Pierre replied that she was just using Colbert\u2019s own words to describe the event. \u201cWe are never going to agree on this,\u201d Colbert ultimately concluded, before sincerely telling Jean-Pierre, \u201cI\u2019m glad that you came here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
