SpaceX\u2019s classified military satellites are emitting a \u201cmysterious signal\u201d that could be violating international standards, NPR reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Experts told the public broadcaster that the Elon Musk-led space company could be flouting international standards set by the United Nations\u2019 International Telecommunication Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cNearby satellites could receive radio-frequency interference and could perhaps not respond properly to commands \u2014 or ignore commands \u2014 from Earth,\u201d Canada-based amateur satellite tracker Scott Tilley, who first spotted the signals<\/a>, told NPR.<\/p>\n

Tilley accidentally discovered the unusual radio frequencies, which are in the 2025-2110 MHz range and are being emitted by at least 170 of SpaceX\u2019s defense satellites.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just a clumsy move at the keyboard,\u201d he told NPR. \u201cI was resetting some stuff and then all of a sudden I\u2019m looking at the wrong antenna, the wrong band.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spectrum is usually reserved for sending data to orbiting satellites from Earth and shouldn\u2019t be used for transmitting data from space.<\/p>\n

Tilley\u2019s investigation into the unusual broadcasting led him to SpaceX\u2019s Starshield constellation of Starlink satellites, which is part of a $1.8 billion contract<\/a> with the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n

Apart from leveraging Starlink tech and \u201claunch capability to support national security efforts,\u201d according to SpaceX\u2019s website<\/a>, little is known about Starshield. Per the firm, the constellation provides \u201cassured global communications to government users.\u201d<\/p>\n

SpaceX has launched eleven batches<\/a> of the secretive satellite since May 2024 on behalf of the National Reconnaissance Office.<\/p>\n

In short, plenty of questions remain regarding the constellation. For one, we don\u2019t know why it\u2019s emitting signals in such an unusual radio frequency. We also don\u2019t know whether its transmissions could be interfering with other space-based assets.<\/p>\n

Tilley told NPR that it\u2019s unlikely to have done any damage so far, given the lack of any public complaints.<\/p>\n

However, given the contentiousness of the radio band, SpaceX might be aware it\u2019s crowding a forbidden frequency.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpaceX is smart and savvy,\u201d he argued, suggesting the company chose a \u201cdo it and ask forgiveness later\u201d approach.<\/p>\n
