State-run Channel One opened<\/a> its Wednesday segment on the summit with a citation of Hungarian Foreign Minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 saying that \u201cthe European pro-war elite and its media are doing everything possible to prevent the Russia-U.S. summit from taking place.\u201d<\/p>\n However, the investigative news outlet Agentstvo noted<\/a> that in the channel\u2019s coverage, Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3\u2019s reference to \u201cthe pro-war elite\u201d was altered to add \u201cEuropean,\u201d even though the Hungarian diplomat never used that word.\u00a0<\/p>\n His original quote read<\/a>: \u201cThe pro-war political elite and their media always behave this way before events that could prove decisive between war and peace.\u201d<\/p>\n Commenting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s planned visits to Brussels and London, where EU leaders are set to band together in support of Kyiv, the Rossia 1 TV channel claimed that the West wanted to \u201cfreeze\u201d the war instead of negotiating a lasting peace.<\/p>\n \u201cWestern media report that Brussels and Kyiv are preparing to present their own peace plan \u2014 one that focuses not on addressing the root causes, but on freezing the conflict,\u201d a Rossia 1 presenter said on air.<\/p>\n \t\tnews \t\t\t\tKremlin Slams \u2018Gossip and Speculation\u2019 Surrounding Putin-Trump Summit Moscow says the \u201croot causes\u201d of its full-scale invasion include Ukraine\u2019s NATO and EU membership aspirations, NATO\u2019s alleged violation of commitments not to expand eastwards and Kyiv\u2019s alleged discrimination against Russian speakers.<\/p>\n Many of the Kremlin’s demands, particularly for territorial concessions, are nonstarters for Kyiv.<\/p>\n Russian federal TV channel NTV also said that \u201cforeign media were deliberately distorting information in order to disrupt the talks,\u201d calling reports that the Budapest summit had been canceled \u201cdisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n Moscow has increasingly cast Kyiv\u2019s allies in Europe as its main adversary and the biggest obstacle to peace since Trump\u2019s inauguration in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Putin said<\/a> responsibility for ending the war primarily lies with Europe, which he accused of escalating the conflict.<\/p>\n Trump meanwhile has voiced growing frustration over Putin\u2019s refusal to agree to a ceasefire in the nearly four-year-long war despite repeated rounds of shuttle diplomacy and the two leaders\u2019 August summit in Alaska.<\/p>\n When asked about Trump\u2019s latest comments on the Budapest talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “No one wants to waste time, neither President Trump nor President Putin.”<\/p>\n \u201cThe pause that has emerged requires intervention at the highest level. But that intervention must be well prepared,\u201d Peskov noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said<\/a> Wednesday that \u201cpreparations for a summit are continuing,” adding that preparations \u201ccan take various forms.\u201d<\/p>\n Ryabkov also added that no arrangements had been made for a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. counterpart Marco Rubio in Budapest.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are no agreements on this.
