Designed by Munich-based architecture studio Auer Weber<\/a>, the BGW and VBG Prevention Centre is a 19-story tower situated beside Hamburg’s port.<\/p>\n

According to Rieder<\/a>, the building is subject to the city’s turbulent climate of wind and rain, which had previously placed demand on the building’s facade.<\/p>\n

To provide a long-term solution against the weather, the exterior was clad in 17,000\u202fsquare metres of a bespoke Rieder system, which included a combination of 3D elements and flat panels.<\/p>\n

“Located right on the Port of Hamburg, where wind and rain are part of daily life, the Previer prevention centre of the BGW and VBG makes an architectural statement of durability and care,” said the company.<\/p>\n

“Its monolithic-looking exterior acts like a tailor-made shield against the elements, combining sculptural form with functional precision.”<\/p>\n

The concrete panels were glass fibre-reinforced and developed in six red shades to give the facade a distinctive and warm appearance while complementing the local brickwork.<\/p>\n

Rieder explained that the panels were also sand-blasted to different degrees, resulting in diverse optical depths to ensure the building appears visually interesting at different angles and times of the day.<\/p>\n

During the design process, the structure of the system was tested under “real-world weather conditions” to warrant the system’s resilience, while the colour was also reviewed to ensure it complemented the surroundings.<\/p>\n

Rieder explained that the project “unites engineering and aesthetics” and provides a long-lasting solution to the demanding weather conditions. Parts of the system were three-dimensional and preassembled, cutting installation time and costs.<\/p>\n

The BGW and VBG Prevention Centre houses education-related advisory services in addition to exhibitions focused on workplace safety and health. It also includes an open atrium, generous public spaces and an accessible ramp.<\/p>\n
