A sweeping showcase marking the 100th anniversary of Art Deco<\/a> has brought the movement back to where it all began: Paris. Now through next April, the Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs<\/a> is presenting a three-story exhibition, called \u201c1925\u20132025: One Hundred Years of Art Deco,\u201d with more than 1,200 historic treasures ranging from silverware and jewelry to furniture and even entire train carriages.<\/p>\n

Historians attribute Art Deco\u2019s beginnings to the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. The movement bridged the aesthetic gap between richly embellished Art Nouveau and the streamlined mid-century styles that followed. Bold geometric patterns, sharp lines, polished metals, and contrasting colors are all hallmarks of the design period, which continues to have a lasting influence<\/a> on designers and artists today.<\/p>\n

ELLE Decor spoke with Mathurin Jonch\u00e8re, a member of the exhibit\u2019s curatorial team, to discuss the new show.<\/p>\n

ELLE Decor: What are some of the can\u2019t-miss pieces in the exhibit?<\/p>\n

Mathurin Jonch\u00e8re: Jewelry has always fascinated the public, and Cartier<\/a> was one the first maisons to drive this new [Art Deco] style, refining its designs with geometric shapes and bold color combinations. We present approximately 70 extraordinary pieces by Cartier, ranging from necklaces to brooches to watches.<\/p>\n

We also highlight three major Art Deco designers: Jacques-\u00c9mile Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, and Jean-Michel Frank. They each embody the very essence of the Art Deco style in their own way, and we present masterpieces by each of them, such as Ruhlmann\u2019s \u00c9lys\u00e9e Sideboard, Gray\u2019s Sir\u00e8ne Chair, and a parchment cabinet by Frank.<\/p>\n

What was the biggest challenge in putting the exhibition together?<\/p>\n

The biggest challenge was to make the public understand what Art Deco is. When we think of Art Deco, we always think of clich\u00e9s like The Great Gatsby, the boyish figure, or brass furniture. We wanted to give them an idea of the diversity that existed between the 1910s and 1930s. In our exhibition, the public will discover the variety of Art Deco, from the geometric abstraction of Sonia Delaunay’s textiles to the more traditional boudoir of Nelly de Rothschild.<\/p>\n

How does the design by Atelier Jodar and Studio MDA enhance the experience for visitors?<\/p>\n

Sylvie Jodar, of Atelier Jodar,<\/a> has a keen eye for objects and knows how to arrange them perfectly. Her scenography helps create a common thread for our exhibition, which is spread across three different levels of the museum. We never adopt a nostalgic approach; on the contrary, the scenography is very contemporary, with bright colors and interference filters that guide the visitor throughout the exhibition. The only homage to Art Deco lies in the use of the screen form, an iconic piece of furniture for artists such as Jean Dunand, Eileen Gray, Armand-Albert Rateau, and Edgar Brandt.<\/p>\n

The section dedicated to the Orient Express is more immersive, with a scenography reminiscent of a train station platform. The visitor will feel as if they are on the train, and this sensation will be reinforced by the presence of two historic carriages (notably the \u00c9toile du Nord from our collection, which has been restored) and three models of the new Orient Express by the Maxime d’Angeac Studio.<\/p>\n

How do you describe the museum\u2019s impact on the original Art Deco movement?<\/p>\n

Our collection was formed at the same time Art Deco was emerging. During the first part of the 20th century, our predecessors purchased works directly from artists or received them as gifts. We were the first museum to use \u201cArt Deco\u201d as a scientific term in an exhibition organized in 1966 entitled \u201cLe style 1925. Art d\u00e9co, Bahaus, Stijl, Esprit Nouveau\u201d and dedicated to the modernity of the 1920s.<\/p>\n

Why do you believe Art Deco has lasting influence?<\/p>\n

Art Deco is timeless thanks to its simple and elegant lines. It easily integrates into interior design, with antique and contemporary furniture and artwork. Today, many designers and architects reference this period by using iconic Art Deco techniques, such as Lison de Caune’s straw marquetry. In the exhibition, we present Maxime d’Angeac’s new Orient Express, scheduled to launch in 2027. He drew inspiration from the historic train, reinventing some of the original decors without ever copying them. In a way, he imagined what the Art Deco style of 2025 would be like.<\/p>\n
