ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) \u2014 Local law enforcement and fire departments are participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.<\/p>\n
It’s a day to collect unused medications.<\/p>\n
Officials say getting rid of meds you’re not using anymore can help prevent those prescriptions from getting into the wrong hands.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a simple and safe step in helping dispose of unused prescriptions.<\/p>\n
In partnership with the 525 foundation, St. Joseph County is doing its part in safely disposing unused medications.<\/p>\n
Since 2016, St. Joe County has collected more than 57,000lbs of unused pills.<\/p>\n
Items that aren’t accepted include needles and liquids.<\/p>\n
Officials say the proper way to dispose used drugs is by bringing them to drop boxes.<\/p>\n
If a life can be saved from disposing unused medications that’s what they want to happen.<\/p>\n
“It’s better to dispose of it this way because it’s safer. We will take it to a location where it’s all incinerated. No names will ever be on it. And if you throw medications away, there’s a chance that it could get in the wrong hands. Children could get into it, stuff like that, where we just don’t want that to happen, ” said Corporal Bryce Lacosse, St. Joseph County Police Department. <\/p>\n
Community members are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted or expired prescription medications at any of the following drop-off locations:<\/p>\n
St. Joseph County Jail at 401 West Sample StreetClay Fire Station 21 at 18776 Cleveland RoadClay Fire Station 25 at 12481 Anderson RoadMishawaka Fire Department at 3000 Harrison Road<\/p>\n
The drop-off will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
