US President Donald Trump on Saturday said that efforts to stabilize Gaza were \u201cadvancing\u201d and that plans for deploying an international peacekeeping force were moving forward, following a meeting with Qatar\u2019s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during a refueling stop at Al Udeid Air Base near Doha.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are a great ally. And these are two great men,\u201d Trump said, seated between the Emir and Qatar\u2019s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani aboard Air Force One. \u201cYou have a safe Middle East right now, and you’re going to keep it that way for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope so,\u201d the Emir replied.<\/p>\n
Trump praised Qatar as a \u201ckey partner in regional stability\u201d and said the Gulf nation would be willing to contribute peacekeeping troops if needed. \u201cThis should be an enduring peace,\u201d he told reporters when asked about the situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, traveling with Trump, said US officials are working with partners on a possible UN resolution or international agreement to authorize a multinational force in Gaza.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany of the countries that have expressed interest in participating\u2014whether financially, with personnel, or both\u2014require that kind of legal framework,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cSo we have a whole team working on that outline.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has been encouraging Arab states to contribute funds and troops to the proposed peacekeeping mission, though Israel has ruled out the involvement of Turkish forces.<\/p>\n
The President\u2019s brief stop in Qatar came as he embarked on a five-day trip to Asia, with scheduled visits to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. The trip is aimed at strengthening US diplomatic ties in the region, as Washington and Beijing seek to ease tensions ahead of Trump\u2019s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Seoul next week.<\/p>\n
