The comedian\u2019s one-year deal with the Comedy Central show ends in December<\/p>\n
\n\tFans have been glad to see Jon Stewart<\/a> back behind the desk at The Daily Show<\/a> on Mondays, and the comedian is feeling the same way, too, confirming that he\u2019d like to extend his return. Stewart\u2019s contract to host Comedy Central\u2019s The Daily Show ends in December.<\/p>\n \n\tOn Sunday, during a conversation with New Yorker editor David Remnick at New Yorker Festival, Remnick asked Stewart if he was going to \u201csign another\u201d deal, as The Hollywood Reporter <\/a>reports<\/a>. The host responded that \u201cwe\u2019re working on staying.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tRemnick asked Stewart if he wanted to remain helming the show, and Stewart confirmed he did.<\/p>\n \n\tStewart began hosting\u00a0The Daily Show\u00a0in 1999 \u2014 taking the place of original host Craig Kilborn \u2014 and stayed with the program until 2015,\u00a0leaving<\/a>\u00a0before Donald Trump\u2019s rise and the 2016 presidential elections. He returned in January 2024 <\/a>to host Monday nights. About a year ago Stewart announced he would continue at The Daily Show through December, as THR notes. However, that was before Trump returned as president and Paramount, owners of Comedy Central, merged with Skydance. Stewart has referred to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison as his \u201cnew boss.\u201d<\/p>\n \t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n \n\tThe late-night TV landscape has been in the midst of controversial upheaval of late. In July, CBS announced<\/a> The Late Show would end next year (CBS is also owned by Paramount). Hosted by Stewart\u2019s former The Daily Show colleague Stephen Colbert for the last decade, The Late Show\u2019s impending demise news came as the Paramount merger with Skydance was still awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission<\/a>, whose chair answers to Trump. That same month, Trump had received a $16 million settlement<\/a> in a lawsuit he filed<\/a> against CBS over the editing of a\u00a060 Minutes\u00a0episode. To boot, Colbert has long been a vocal critic of Trump. CBS said in its announcement of the cancellation that \u201cThis is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tMeanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s show was suspended for less than a week<\/a> last month, after comments he made on\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live!\u00a0about conservative activist Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassin and following a\u00a0threat from President Donald Trump\u2019s FCC chair Brendan Carr, who publicly\u00a0called on<\/a>\u00a0licensed broadcasters to stop airing Kimmel\u2019s show.
