Carson City publisher Dragon Crown Books announces the release of the first of two volumes in its Nevada Nightmares anthology.
Nevada Nightmares, Vol. 1 is an excursion into some of Nevada’s weirdest, scariest, and most offbeat stories, assembled by the editors of Dragon Crown Books. The first entry in this two-volume set features new stories from some of the Silver State’s most acclaimed contemporary authors, set alongside vintage tales from Nevada’s literary legends.
Stephen H. Provost and award-winning horror author Sharon Marie Provost have delved into the archives to find celebrated and lesser-known tales from the likes of Mark Twain, Dan De Quille, Sarah Winnemucca and Sam Davis. They’ve also included tales by celebrated authors and seasoned paranormal investigators from Northern Nevada.
Modern authors featured in this volume are B.B. Arbogast, L.F. Falconer, Sandie La Nae, Ellie Mage, Richard Moreno, Janice Oberding, Sharon Marie Provost, Stephen H. Provost, Megan Russ, and Jeadene Solberg.
Sprinkled among these stories are a number of newspaper articles from the halcyon days of Nevada’s youth: some, deliberate hoaxes; others, legends; still others, reports that may or may not have held some degree of truth. These pages contain tales that span a century and a half of history — and legends that date back far earlier: tales of ghosts, sea serpents, and phenomena peculiar to this neck of the woods (or sagebrush). Readers will find stories about hauntings, gnomes, nuclear tests, outlaws, mining tragedies, serial killers, and more.
This is Sharon’s first project since her debut work, Shadow’s Gate, won the Imadjinn Award for Best Short Story Collection in a national competition. She received the award in July at the Imaginarium Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the third anthology published by Dragon Crown Books, following the ACES Anthologies in 2023 and 2024, which featured all Northern Nevada authors. Dragon Crown has published more than 50 books in genres ranging including horror, Nevada history, children’s, science fiction, biography, and fantasy.

Nevada Nightmares, Vol. 1 is available at dragoncrownbooks.com and on Amazon, with Volume 2 set for release on Nov. 1. The volume will also be available from the editors at several upcoming events, including Dayton Valley Days, the Candy Dance in Genoa, Mark Twain Days at the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, and Menagerie Oddities Market events in San Luis Obispo, Virginia City, and Nevada City.
