gustaf westman and IKEA unveil playful tableware collection

Known for his playful approach to everyday objects, Swedish designer Gustaf Westman collaborates with IKEA to launch a vibrant 12-piece collection of tableware and home accessories. Building on his first unveiled piece, the ‘throne’ for the Swedish meatball, the series spans porcelain plates and cups, candleholders, lighting, and more,  offering a playful take on festive tradition. The collection is guided by a simple idea: celebration doesn’t require a special occasion, inviting people to create joy and connection on their own terms. The collaboration marks Westman’s first-ever product design partnership and finds a natural home in IKEA’s annual winter collection, VINTERFINT.

‘For me, this was an opportunity to take traditional holiday decor aesthetics and turn it on its head, instead, introducing a sense of playfulness and boldness. This is my interpretation of the holidays; it’s a new design for a new generation,’ Westman explains.

Sculptural forms and bold colors redefine festive homeware

The collection by Gustaf Westman and IKEA is defined by his curvy, confident forms and bold color palette. Classic reds and greens nod to traditional holiday design, while bubblegum pink and baby blue twist convention into something modern and joyful. Shapes are expressive yet functional: square-edged plates with rounded wells create a mosaic-like cohesion, a dedicated meatball plate honors IKEA’s iconic Swedish staple, and an oversized cup-and-saucer set for glögg accommodates biscuits, recalling Westman’s childhood memories of festive generosity.

Lighting also features sculptural inventiveness. Candlesticks and porcelain candleholders echo the plates’ square-and-round forms, while a rechargeable lantern twists into an orbital shape. A modern reinterpretation of the classic Swedish candelabra lamp rounds out the range, linking contemporary design with tradition. The bouncy vase exemplifies the Swedish designer’s playful experimentation with form. Made from a single metal spiral and paired with a glass vessel, the design is both functional and humorous: ‘A rounded form has no clear ending, which I think gives an object more life. The pieces don’t seem to need each other, but they do, like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.’

Maria O’Brian, Range Identity Leader of the household goods brand, adds, ‘Gustaf’s approach to color and form feels very true to IKEA, but he challenges conventions in a bold, expressive way. We are thrilled to make the work of such an exciting designer accessible to a wider audience.’
