HP New Zealand has become the first local IT brand to earn dual Eco Choice Aotearoa (ECA) and TCO Certified certification.

The dual certification is the result of a partnership between New Zealand’s own sustainability certification body, ECA, and its global counterpart, TCO Certified, through an affiliate programme which aims to harmonise sustainability certification standards across borders and reduce confusion in the marketplace.

Through the programme, ECA and TCO Certified parent organisation TCO Development mutually recognise each other’s certifications as reflecting international best practices in sustainability, said the New Zealand certification body’s CEO, Laura Gemmell.

“The need for sustainable IT products has never been more urgent, with Kiwis currently generating 10 to 15 kilograms of e-waste per person annually, and only around 25 per cent of that is being recycled,” said Gemmell.

“With this partnership with TCO Certified, we’re excited to make it easier for both procurers and individual consumers in New Zealand to make responsible purchasing decisions, as products bearing ECA and TCO Certified’s dual certification meet stringent criteria on durability, repairability, product stewardship, and responsible sourcing.”

The dual recognition brings HP’s global sustainability commitments into a locally trusted framework that make responsible procurement simpler for New Zealand businesses and consumers, said HP New Zealand managing director Shannon Harris.

“Kiwis want credible, easy to understand signals that a device will last longer, use fewer resources and comes from a responsible supply chain,” she said. “HP products have long held TCO Certified certification, and building on this foundation with the addition of a locally respected ecolabel helps support our customers as we collectively shift towards a circular, low-carbon future.”

HP products covered by the dual certification include a wide range of display monitors, all-in-one-PCs, desktops, notebooks and laptops, and its Poly-branded headsets.
