New Zealand telecommunications provider 2degrees has introduced a free seven-day eSIM trial for non-customers, offering consumers the opportunity to test its mobile network with a substantial quota of data, minutes, and texts. This initiative allows eligible users to experience the service on their own eSIM-capable devices without switching SIM cards or visiting a retail store.

eSIM access

The trial provides up to 15GB of data, 500 calling minutes, and 100 SMS messages for one week. Only individuals currently signed with other mobile providers and who are not existing 2degrees customers can participate. Activation occurs fully online, streamlining the process and eliminating the need for a physical SIM card.

eSIM technology enables users to run two numbers on a single handset, allowing trialists to maintain their existing number and services throughout the test period. The company expects this to remove traditional frictions associated with switching or sampling a new network.

Confidence in service

“We are so confident in our network that we want people to experience it for themselves,” said Mark Callander, CEO, 2degrees.

The CEO stated the offer is designed to make the trial process as seamless as possible. Users simply enrol online if their device is compatible and hold an account with another New Zealand network operator.

Callander emphasised the company’s aim to demonstrate its network capability directly to consumers. “This trial is about backing ourselves,” said Callander. “We’re confident that once people try 2degrees, they’ll want to stay. Our network performance speaks for itself – now we’re just making it easier for Kiwis to experience it. And we look forward to them becoming customers and experiencing our great value and service too.”

Industry context

All major mobile networks in New Zealand have received awards from international testing organisations. Callander noted the prevalence of paid promotions in the sector. “All the main mobile networks in NZ win awards from overseas testing companies, and some spend mega bucks buying the licences to these awards and using them to promote their service. We think offering a non-strings attached trial is the best way to show off our network,” said Callander.

Eligibility requirements

The free seven-day eSIM trial is available to anyone in New Zealand with an active account on another network and a device compatible with eSIM technology. The trial is open for activation until late December. Throughout the test, participants keep access to their primary number, minimising disruption while assessing the network’s performance.
