Ryan Coogler knows ball … specifically, leprechauns who play ball. One of the influences for the vampire Remmick in Sinners was the Disney Channel Original movie The Luck of the Irish, the director said on a panel with Deadline on November 15. When an attendee identified herself as former Disney Channel scheduler Kimberly Luce and mentioned that she pitched the idea for the 2001 film, Coogler’s response was swift: “God bless you.” According to Coogler, The Luck of the Irish has a lot of fans in Oakland, California. “We used to watch that movie like crazy,” he said. “That was our first introduction to some of the similarities in Irish folk music to, basically, our music. There was a small Irish community in the Bay, and we would talk about it. That movie was kind of a touchpoint for us to jump off of, crazy enough. We’ve been fascinated with that culture in my household.”

Coogler said on the Get Rec’d podcast earlier this year that Remmick’s red eyes and demeanor are inspired by Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. But while Pixar contributed to the character’s personality, it looks like we have Disney to thank for the dancing — Jack O’Connell was definitely serving Saint of the Step. During the Deadline event, Coogler also credited Irish American author Rosemary Graham for being the first person to encourage him to write screenplays when she was his creative writing professor. He went on to describe Sinners as a “shout-out to Bram Stoker,” the Irish author of Dracula. Maybe he can keep this pattern going and cast Irish darling Ayo Edebiri in his next film, Black Panther 3?
