Paul played the rugged Mick Dundee while Linda played the polished American reporter Sue Charlton. In many ways Paul and Linda’s love story mirrored Mick and Sue’s.

Paul and Linda’s relationship was complicated at times. From Linda wanting to quit the movie after first meeting Paul to the pair falling in love while Paul was married to his first life Noelene, we unpack their full relationship timeline right here:

In 1984 Linda had no idea who Paul was, aside from a “commercial, vaguely”.

She was a trained actor while Paul didn’t want to rehearse. Linda thought she was a working with an “unprofessional” and wanted to quit and return back home to the US.

But director Peter Faiman had an idea to mend the rift. They filmed as much as they could in sequence, starting with the scene they met.

Peter’s plan worked and Linda was eventually won over by Paul’s charm, she of course stayed and loved every minute of it.

“I loved [Paul’s] character, I thought if I ever met that man in life I would want his children,” Linda said in an 1984 interview.

“Paul Hogan is just great to work with, he’s a really generous actor, he’s a really good actor. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought he was just terrific.”

Of course their working relationship eventually developed into something more.

”She saw now that he was funny and fell in love, eventually,” director Peter laughed. “So really the story of the movie is the story of their lives.”

Paul and Linda share their first kiss

Mick and Sue’s first kiss by the billabong was also Paul and Linda’s first kiss.

“I thought it was beautiful the way he hesitated before he went in, I think there was great truth in that,” actress and the movie’s producer and co-writer John Cornell’s wife Delvene Delaney said.

Paul was still married to his first wife Noelene Edwards (although for the second time) but it was instantly clear that he and Linda had real chemistry.

“Linda was concerned because Paul was married but what can you do?” Delvene said in the doco

“I just tried to be her confidant but obviously make her feel like you have to follow your heart. And you do. And they did.

“It was quite beautiful to see them find that kind of love.”

Then in a surprising twist they reconnected and remarried in 1982. Their second attempt at marriage lasted until 1989, giving them seven more years together before calling it quits for good. Over the course of their marriages, Paul and Noelene welcomed five children, Brett, Clay, Scott, Todd and Lauren.
