Within the next decade, India’s semiconductor industry is poised to rival global leaders like the United States and China, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, Vaishnaw highlighted the government’s ambitious plans, which have progressed more rapidly than expected. Central to this initiative is a $10 billion incentive scheme aimed at enhancing the country’s manufacturing, assembly, and design capabilities in the semiconductor sector.

Vaishnaw emphasized that India is on track to achieve significant milestones in semiconductor production by 2031-2032. He stated that the country would reach a level comparable to that of established leaders in the industry. This rapid advancement is attributed to the government’s strategic investments and initiatives, which have already attracted major global players. Notably, companies like Micron Technology are establishing testing and packaging operations in Gujarat, while Tata Group is preparing to launch chip fabrication within India. These developments mark a pivotal moment for the Indian semiconductor ecosystem, which has only been in development for three years.

The minister also mentioned that three semiconductor facilities are expected to commence commercial production early next year. This achievement is crucial as countries worldwide, including the US, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, are increasing their investments to secure future supplies for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and electric mobility.

Leveraging Engineering Talent and Design Capabilities

Vaishnaw pointed out that India’s strengths extend beyond financial incentives. The nation boasts a robust engineering talent pool and growing expertise in chip design. He noted that these capabilities enable India to tackle complex challenges in technology. The minister expressed confidence that the combination of financial backing and skilled professionals will accelerate the country’s semiconductor ambitions.
