An espionage thriller series hailed by fans as one of the “best ever” has returned to Netflix. Homeland first hit screens in 2011 and focuses on Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) a CIA operative with bipolar disorder who is convinced that Nicholas Brody (Damien Lewis), a US marine who was captured by al-Qaeda and spent eight years in captivity before being rescued, was turned by the terror group.

The long-running series initially follows her attempts to prove her suspicions that Brody poses a risk to the US, while struggling with her mental health and facing scepticism from intelligence colleagues. The series was developed by Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa, and based on the Israeli series Prisoners of War by Gideon Raff, who was an executive producer on Homeland.

It was originally broadcast on Showtime in the US, and ran for eight series, with final batch of episodes premiering in February 2020.

It’s currently available on various streaming services and returned to Netflix on Thursday, November 20.

Fans have flocked to IMDb to praise the series, with saying it boasts the “best ending ever”.

“Today I watched the last Episode of Homeland. All I can say is just thank you to the whole Cast for one of the best TV Shows I’ve ever watched,” they wrote.

“I’m so sad it’s over now but it’s a good feeling sadness because the ending of that was just PERFECT!”

Another called it “one of the best series ever” and a “complex series that it shouldn’t be missed by those who like current affairs and exciting action films”.

A third added: “I’m a die hard fan of Homeland and I have watched since 2011. Season 1 to 5 was outstanding, but I feel 6 and 7 was lost the touch that we hope.

“However season 08, everything was right back on the track. I like to say this is one of the great ending of the TV series I have ever seen.”

A fourth said: “The show’s exploration of terrorism, mental illness, and political intrigue is both timely and compelling. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves political thrillers.”

The series has a strong 8.3/10 IMDb rating and is regularly cited as among the best series out there.

The hard-hitting show deals contains things like strong bloody violence, torture and suicide – so may not be suitable for everyone.

Homeland is streaming now on Netflix, Disney+ and on Channel 4 with ads, or without them if you have a Channel4+ subscription.
