As a red-blooded, flag-waving, apple-pie-consuming American, I am feeling so grateful for “Dying for Sex,” easily the best show of the year, along with “The Lowdown,” “Untamed” and a handful of others. Without these series, this entire “best of” 2025 TV could well be titled “A Salute to English Television.” There are reasons for this.
One is curatorial. Despite what felt like an Anglo insurgence this year, we don’t get to watch everything someone would see in the U.K. We get a selection. So the quality of the imported skews better than the domestic. It’s like beer: There’s Bud Light—game shows, food shows, network sitcoms, network dramas, Discovery documentaries, a multitude of programs devoted to serial killers, and “The View.” And there’s Schorschbräu Schorschbock 57—which would be German opera on PBS.
