Liza Minnelli’s memoir is on the way!

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the EGOT-winner’s forthcoming memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!, out next year from Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group.

The memoir, per the book’s official synopsis, tells Minnelli’s “fascinating, untold story.” Born to Hollywood icons Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, Minnelli, 79, began her professional career when she was just a teenager, and appeared across the stage and screen in iconic productions like Cabaret, Flora the Red Menace and many more.

Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! sees the star reflecting on her acclaimed career, along with personal moments from throughout her life, like her lifelong struggle with substance use disorder, her high-profile marriages and her experience with chronic anxiety.

“Despite every challenge, Liza’s is a life wrapped in laughter and her tremendous capacity to give and receive love,” the book’s synopsis adds. “Today at nearly 80, she opens her heart, mind and memories, sharing secrets we never knew.”

PEOPLE first announced Minnelli’s memoir, a book that has been a long time in the making, in August 2024.

“Since I was old enough to put pencil to paper, people asked me to write books about my career,” Minnelli said in a statement at the time. “‘Absolutely not! ‘Tell it when I’m gone!’ Was my philosophy.’”

It was only after a “series of unfortunate events,” including “a sabotaged appearance at the Oscars,” “a film with twisted half-truths ” and “a recent miniseries that just didn’t get it right … All made by people who didn’t know my family, and don’t really know me” that she decided to collaborate on the book with Tony winner and longtime friend Michael Feinstein.

“Thank you all for loving me so much … being concerned about me,” Minelli continued in the statement. “I want you to know I’m still here, still kicking a–, still loving life and still creating. So, until this book arrives, know that I’m laughing, safe in every way, surrounded by loved ones and excited to see what’s right around the curve of life. Kids, wait ‘til you hear this.”
