Emerging markets are expected to lead an anticipated 22% in global egg growth in the next ten years, according to a Rabobank report.
In joint research with the World Egg Organisation (WEO), the Dutch investment bank said the egg market has “grown rapidly over the past three decades” – doubling from 46m metric tonnes in 1995 to 99m metric tonnes in 2025.
“The egg market, alongside poultry, was the fastest-growing animal-protein market in the last ten years,” the report noted.

The research suggests that around 99% of the projected growth will come from emerging markets, led by Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
“Higher per capita consumption due to rising incomes, urbanisation, and evolving consumer preferences are fueling demand, though population growth in these regions also plays a role,” according to the report.
However, the global egg industry faces new challenges, but also opportunities, in supply chain modernisation, distribution and sustainability.
These factors look set to “drive continued investment and innovation throughout the global value chain”.
“Eggs will maintain their strong market position compared to other proteins,” Nan-Dirk Mulder, the senior global specialist in animal protein at the bank’s RaboResearch unit, said.
“Growth will be increasingly driven by rising incomes, improved availability, consumer preferences, marketing, and product development rather than population growth alone.”
Mulder added with respect to emerging markets: “The rise of megacities in these regions will necessitate changes in distribution, marketing, and product development.”
Meanwhile, in more mature markets, demand is shifting toward the value-added eggs segments, along with cage-free, organic and functional eggs.
“In addition to price, consumers are driven by health and wellness trends, convenience, taste, sustainability, and animal welfare,” Mulder said.
Meanwhile, the report suggests that “technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and smart farming will be critical to improving efficiency, biosecurity, and environmental performance”.
