MIRI (Sept 11): A two-day talk titled ‘Teen Health and Suicide Prevention’ held here saw the participation of 466 students and 42 teachers from SMK Temenggong Datuk Lawai Jau, Long San, Ulu Baram.

Miri Hospital psychiatrist Dr Ravivarma Rao Panirselvam, who was one of the speakers, said five sessions were conducted covering topics on healthy lifestyles, risky behaviours, crisis management among students, teenage mental well-being, and stress management for teachers.

“In addition to the talks, there were also interactive activities, including a quiz session for students,” he said.

Dr Ravivarma added the initiative aimed to raise awareness among youths on health, coping strategies, and self-care.

The programme was sponsored by the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health.

It was organised by the Miri Division Health Office’s Psychology and Counselling Unit and Non-Communicable Diseases Unit, together with Miri Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health.
