The Amazing Race 38 episode 10, the Thanksgiving evening episode here in the U.S., was kind of a slog, and I didn’t even watch it after gorging myself on brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes and mapo tufo and apple pie.
The teams left their hotel after midnight, and most seemed to check in the next day around sunset or after dark, so it was a long day—and it felt like it on TV. I wonder what an hour-long version of this episode would have been like.
Losing an older player and a non-couple, non-sibling team is tough, but also Jack and Chelsie were just not made for this race. That was clear after this moment:
Phil Keoghan: Teams must now travel down this short hallway, exiting at the only door at the other end. All they have to do is follow the line painted down the center of the hallway, which has no other markings or doors or windows.
Chelsie: (spins in circles as other teams run past)
Jack: Man, this is another difficult navigation (calls down to Chelsie from the ceiling) You missed the turn!
Chelsie: Let’s ask for directions (opens a Police Box door and flies away in the TARDIS)
Starting with a flight equalizer that one team didn’t get included on didn’t help, though Taylor and Kyland made up their 45-minute deficit. And there was movement, with Izzy and Paige placing second, their best position yet.
Adam nearly getting taken out by heat exhaustion and/or blood sugar wasn’t great, either. Travel involves these kinds of real-world situations, but I’d rather the game come down to navigation, challenge performance, and teamwork. Watching someone struggle through a challenge is very different than watching some physically collapse.
Adam collapsed during the first Roadblock on Amazing Race 38 episode 10—so then he did the next one, too.
Meanwhile, the other teams are just not competition for Jag and Jas. Sure, they still might not win because it all comes down to that final leg—or one big task screw-up, as Tucker and Eric proved.
But Phil Keoghan seemed bored when Jag and Jas checked in first for the fifth time. And even they seem surprised at how much better they’re doing than everyone else. “I’m kind of still surprised by that,” Jas said as they headed to the pit stop without seeing any other team since the first Roadblock.
As to Adam’s blood sugar issues, he chose to do the episode’s Roadblock, too, to “redeem” himself by doing two more physical tasks in the sun! I guess toxic masculinity doesn’t raise one’s blood sugar or else he’d be coasting.
“Adam rarely puts himself out there. At some point he let the diabetes be a weakness, and I want to show him that it doesn’t hold him back,” Joseph said, speaking of toxic masculinity. Sometimes we need to listen and take care of our bodies, bro, not just power through until we’re dead.
Speaking of: “Die, Adam!” Joseph actually yelled to Adam. “Die! Die!” Then he realized what he was saying in his imitation of the Italian cheering section and corrected himself before finding a new cheer. “Die the Italian way, not the English way.”
Other non-deadly highlights:
Teams had to build a self-supporting DaVinci bridge—just as a Route Marker task—and we got to watch a cat give them side eye. The cats are really winning this season.
At the flower dress-making Roadblock, Jack flirted with the judge. “You have beautiful eyes,” he said. “Aren’t you married?” Then Chelsie got him to focus by projectile vomiting.
Right before Izzy finally got the okay after multiple attempts at the flowers, she said, “Did I mention we can’t keep plants alive at home?” Did anyone mention keeping the flowers alive was not part of this task because I think she may have misread the clue.
Taylor told us the teams that U-turned her “don’t exist to me. At this point, they’re just pawns.” Then she said, But I do support women, walked over to Izzy and Paige’s car, and pulled the brake lines out of the engine.
