Why are fans confused about Spider-Noir’s connection to the Spider-Verse movies?

The Spider-Noir posters reveal that Cage is playing a version of Spider-Man who is Ben Reilly. In Marvel Comics, Ben Reilly is a genetic clone of Peter Parker/Spider-Man who establishes his own identity as the Scarlet Spider, though he’s also gone by other names — in recent lore, for example, he took a villainous turn and went by Chasm.

In the Spider-Verse movies, however, the version of Spider-Noir that Cage voices is a Peter Parker variant. This means that the version of Spider-Man who will be in the forthcoming show won’t be the same character as the one who plays a prominent role in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

It’s possible that there will still be some connective tissue there, as this universe’s version of Ben Reilly could be a clone of the Peter Parker who appeared in Spider-Verse. It’s also possible that, while Spider-Noir is said to take place somewhere in the multiverse of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, there is no connection between the two characters. Whatever the case may be, fans are now wondering why Ben Reilly is the star of Spider-Noir instead of Peter Parker.

A description of the show reads, “The series tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

An exact premiere date for Spider-Noir has not yet been announced, though it is known that the show will arrive at some point in 2026.
