David Letterman threw shots at President Donald Trump when he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on December 9.

Jimmy, 58, is known to constantly mock the 79-year-old POTUS, so it seemed that David, 78, joined in on Tuesday’s show. While talking about Trump, David labeled him a “fool,” expressing that he “should expect and examine every bit of ridicule he receives”.

Being that Jimmy is one of Trump’s loudest critics, even after being penalized for his boldness, it makes sense why David praised the fellow comedian as the “leader of the resistance.” But, given the previous consequences he received for making a certain comment on his talk show, Jimmy disagreed, calling himself out as “totally ineffective.”

For a short time in September, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was removed from the air after the host made a controversial take on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which happened earlier that month.

Jimmy said during a monologue in an episode that aired in mid-September that Trump and his allies were “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them” and tried to “score political points from it.”

Additionally, Jimmy compared Trump’s reaction to Charlie’s murder to “how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”

Shortly after the episode of Jimmy criticizing Charlie aired, ABC announced that it was pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its lineup. ABC’s announcement came after Nextstar — one of the largest owners of local TV stations in the U.S., with 28 ABC affiliates under its belt — said it will preempt the late-night program for the “immediate future.”

At the time, Nexstar said in a press release, “Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets,” Nexstar said in a recent press release.

Also, Nexstar’s broadcasting division president, Andrew Alford, said, “Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located.”

He continued, “Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue.”

Countless fans and celebrities were outraged with Jimmy’s program being temporarily suspended since many believed it to be an attack on free speech. After much backlash and protesting, ABC announced almost a week after Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended that the show would return on Tuesday, September 23.

Jimmy has been on-air ever since.
