A waterfront home by one of New Zealand’s star architects has sold for just under $2 million.

The unusual five-bedroom spread designed by Ian Burrow, who is famous for his quirky homes, was snapped up by local buyers last month.

Bayleys agent Libby Greenwood, who brokered the deal for Aeroview Drive, in Auckland’s Beachhaven, described the new owners as “perfect” for the property.

The 1980s house, which boasts chocolate kiss turrets, conversation pits, porthole windows, and vaulted ceilings, hit the market in January with an RV of $2.55m.

Greenwood said while there had been a lot of interest in the property, it had taken some time to find a match.

“We had over 120 groups through. Many were fascinated with the property, but had to sell their own house before buying,” she told OneRoof, noting that several offers had fallen through, with one potential buyer investigating a million-dollar redevelopment of the house before pulling out.

“Not every property sells overnight. Some simply wait for the right buyers. And they found us. The new owners will love and enjoy everything the house offers. They are buying this as a legacy for their family.”

Greenwood said the buyers had considered purchasing the property in 2013, when it was on the market. “There is work to be done. They will reinforce the deck, and over time, they might upgrade the house, but they are going to live in it and enjoy it.”

The vendors, who now live in Bali, bought the home in 2018 for just under $2m and had been renting it out on Airbnb. It sits on 1087sqm, has riparian rights and access to a shared jetty.

Another architecturally designed waterfront Auckland house, this one by the late Ron Sang, sold recently for $2.3m – below its RV of $.

The four-bedroom house, which sits on a 1588sqm section on Oakpark Place, one of the largest waterfront sites in West Harbour, was snapped up in August after hitting the market in February. It had been owned by the vendors for 24 years.

Another Sang house is on the market in the Coromandel for $2.395m.

OneRoof reported earlier this year that a Morrinsville father-of-four had hand-picked Sang in 1986 to design his beach house overlooking the Pauanui Estuary, at 31 Golden Hills Drive.

Son Steve told OneRoof his late father was impressed with how genteel and educated Sang was after he had met him and that the architect had designed a timeless cedar home with floor-to-ceiling reflective glass windows and a high sloping roof.

The house was futuristic for the time, but “not too way out.”

“It’s amazing how 38 years later it’s still pretty distinctive,” he said.

“It’s got a lovely balance and harmony to its structure. It doesn’t have kooky towers and pothole windows. It’s a simple design, but eye-catching because of its symmetry and balance.”
