Apple has released iOS 26.2 alongside another iPhone update, iOS 18.7.3. Both updates fix serious holes in the iPhone software that have been used in real-life attacks. However, iOS 26.2 offers new features and bug fixes, while iOS 18.7.3 is a security-only iPhone upgrade.

The Case For iOS 26.2

iOS 26.2 Offers Better Protection From Spyware And Other Threats: Apple recently issued a warning that iPhones were being targeted by spyware. It is likely that the already-exploited issues patched in iOS 26.2 and iOS 18.7.3 were used to plant the stealthy malware on people’s devices.

Spyware is so dangerous because once it is on your iPhone, it can see and hear everything you do, including via encrypted apps such as Signal and WhatsApp.

It is extremely targeted at users such as dissidents, journalists and business leaders, however, no one wants to be caught in the cross-fire when holes in software can be used in attacks.

Those who choose iOS 26.2 over iOS 18.7.3 will be more protected from spyware and other major threats because Apple offers a feature in iOS 26 called Background Security Improvements. This means major iPhone holes are fixed in the background so you don’t have to wait for the next point update.

iOS 26.2 Is More Secure Than iOS 18.7.3 And Adds New Features: Another reason to choose iOS 26.2 over iOS 18.7.3 is the fact that the former comes with a bunch of security features and improvements.

In iOS 26.2, Apple will add improvements to Enhanced Safety Alerts, as well as adding new privacy options for AirDrop. Other new features include options for the controversial Liquid Glass feature, Podcast enhancements, offline lyric support in Apple Music, sleep score revisions, alarms for reminders and AirPods Live Translation in the EU.

At the same time, iOS 26.2 is always going to be more secure than its iOS 18 equivalent, because Apple focuses on finding holes in its newer software, as well as upgrading it with enhancements that make it more robust. Apple is recommending iOS 26 as of iOS 26.1, with the iOS 18 option appearing lower down on the menu.

The Case For iOS 18.7.3

Your iPhone Can’t Run iOS 26.2: One reason to select iOS 18..7.3 over iOS 26.2 is that you don’t actually have the choice. While lots of iPhones can run iOS 26, there are also so notable devices that can’t run the newer software. These include the iPhone X, XS, XR and XS Max. All other iPhones released before this date also can’t run iOS 26. However iOS 18.7.3 will keep your iPhone secure from major security holes.

You Can’t Stand iOS Bugs: Another reason not to choose iOS 26.2 over iOS 18.7.3 is you can’t stand the bugs that come and sometimes persist with newer software. This can sometimes be an issue for business users who need to use certain apps. However, on the flip side, businesses also need to prioritise iPhone security since they are a target, making iOS 26.2 the better option overall.

iOS 26.2 Vs iOS 18.7.3 — Which New iPhone Update should you choose?

Whether to choose iOS 26.2 or iOS 18.7.3 is still down to you.

Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at ESET recommends “updating to the very latest iOS” because it offers better security and privacy. But if you just want stability, iOS 18.7.3 “offers a small patch with some needed fixes,” Moore concedes.

Apple is upgrading both its new and older operating systems with security patches in tandem, for now. But also note that if your iPhone can run iOS 26, this may be your last chance to stay on iOS 18.

The latest security update included in both iOS 26.2 and iOS 18.7.3 is a big one, so you need to make your selection now to keep your iPhone safe.

So, go to your Settings > General > Software Update and choose iOS 26.2 or iOS 18.7.3 now.
